PERSONALITY, Niko often feels like he was born into the wrong life. He has qualities that don't mesh well with a mafia lifestyle, and so has had to hide them. It's a mystery to everyone where they came from. Niko has an incredibly strong code of honor that he lives by. He couldn't stab someone in the back or beat someone through trickery. If he did, he would feel crippling guilt. He also has a powerful loyalty to his family, which wasn't as frowned upon as his honor code. He has a hard time judging and committing, always seeing multiple sides to every issue. He was the quiet one of the family, observing and learning. He feels trapped, but he knows that there is no way he can break out of the Russian mafia. It wasn't so bad before, when he knew his older brother would be the one taking over and he would be more or less free of that responsibility. Niko "family business" early, and even though he wasn't as thoroughly drilled and trained to take over like his elder brother, he was forced to learn the ins and outs of it. When you grow up around crime and violence, you accept it as normal. He came to terms with the justice system they had within their branch of the mafia, and adapted his morals to suit it as much as was possible. Above all he relied on the stability of his family. He could count on them, and they could all count on each other. When your father is the boss of a massive organization, it's hard for anything to shake you. He would never have expected the instability to come from the inside. When his brother fled the country with a forbidden son, Nikolai's world was flipped. Suddenly his brother was Public Enemy Number 1. The person he had looked up to, the person that would eventually take over the organization so he would be spared. This person vanished, and was cast out of the family. Talk of him was forbidden. He was at first furious at his brother, then sad for him. When the order came to hunt him down and kill him, though, Nikolai was horrified. When he was told that he would be the one to represent the Russian mafia... well, he didn't know what to do. He had to obey, of course. Loyalty to family above all. However, he still regarded his brother as family. Where did that leave Niko? Trapped, as usual.
