Fred was an adventurous boy and very spontaneous, he loved doing crazy things other people would stop to think twice, he just went the flow and was always somehow happy with the results. Since he was in Paris he didn’t have many chances of going out and do those things with his friends, though he was a very sociable guy he had trouble having a social life as ironic as that might sound. The reason was that his major took most of his time; he was forced to go to the gym, to practice every day… no time for girlfriends or even friends. Somehow he managed to get to know Madison and she was as crazy as he was, it had been a great thing to meet her because Fred was very happy when he was with her, they were always joking around and having fun and she was as random as he was. So she didn’t think it was weird to randomly invite her out for a hiking trip with such short notice, it was something they both will do, throw an idea and just do it without thinking about it. It was easier that way, people never get to do half the things they wanted because they planned them way too much.
The only thing Fred planned on his whole life was coming to Paris and not even that had been totally planned out. It was just the way Fred did things, and he loved how the road could bring him surprises never knowing what to expect or taking things for granted. There was always a turn, something new that would make him change his path and he liked to go with the flow, he liked how life could always surprise him. His love life was a complete mess, he found Aara once in a café and they had a crush on each other, talking for hours… then she just vanished. It’s not as if he had thought they were going to be together forever, in fact he didn’t think of a future with her because he didn’t want to plan things, and well his major always throw in a lot of difficult things for relationships. Shaking his head and packing his things throwing a glance at the clock he ran to his car throwing the bag on the back seats and drove to Madi’s place. He had promised her to give her enough time to eat and he was trying to be on time but he was so excited it was hard to hold on.
After long fifteen minutes he was at the front door and found a place to park his car, but he didn’t want to go out of the car just wanting Madi to get in there as soon as possible so they could be on their way to have fun; taking his phone out Fred texted her to get down and a smile spread across his face when he saw her. Whoever saw them together would think they had something going on, he was sure there was some rule about a teacher and a student forbidden to have something together but right at the moment he could care less about what people thought, they were only friends and unless that got them into trouble he wouldn’t give it second thoughts. There was a darker side of Fred, the one he didn’t like to show around, one that came from years and years of being bullied and teased by his class mates, now he was only going to use it if someone ever dared to get her friend in trouble. Fred hooted her again, waiting for her eagerly inside the warmth of his car. “Come on Madi, we are going to find traffic!” He smiled at her resting his hands on the wheel.

Madison had been raised in America, meaning that she had experienced more than a little culture shock when she had first arrived in Paris. Everything was so slow here; the meals, the people, the... everything! She was used to rushing around and not giving a second thought about taking time to enjoy the simple pleasures in life, but then she had moved to Europe... and wow. She'd been forced to slow down her schedule and take things at a near queenly pace. It was even frowned upon to be fast, and that was a polar opposite of the world she had grown up in. Of course, even in a place like this where it was considered normal to take life slowly, Madison couldn't change her core personality. She was hyperactive, loud, mischievous, and fast, and she wasn't going to change that for anybody. Because of that, she hadn't found many friends at first, simply because none of them could handle her. Or at least, that was how she had seen it. Madison was all for meeting in the middle and not forcing anyone to change, but no one seemed to want to compromise with her in Paris, so she had gone generally friendless for a while. She was still well liked, but no one was really close to her. It reminded her painfully of home, so she'd decided to go friend hunting. It was around then that she'd met Fred.
While he wasn't American, he was one of the few French natives Madison had met that was as fast paced as her. She'd loved him instantly. Not in, you know, that way, but he was almost like a little brother to her. And when he'd invited her to go hiking? Well, she'd been all for it. That had been less than half an hour ago, and now she was waiting impatiently for her microwave mac and cheese to cook while she stood in the kitchen, tapping her foot and looking at her watch in an almost comical way. Why couldn't microwave food cook faster? She would have cooked something by hand just so she had something to do, but Madison had a talent for letting food burn. If you liked your food black and crispy, she was the chef to go to. But eventually, the microwave made the little beeping noise that signaled that the food was all cooked, so she yanked open the little door and pulled the food out, realizing only a few seconds later that she didn't have a fork to eat it with. Shit. Practically throwing the little black tray onto the tiny circular table in the middle of the kitchen, she dug through the cupboards before finding a little fork and wolfing down the still-hot macaroni. It burned her throat, but whatever. She normally didn't eat this fast, but with Fred coming to pick her up any minute, there was an odd sense of urgency.
She was done with the food soon enough, threw the tray away, and sat on the table, fidgeting. She wasn't a very patient person, and it occurred to her that maybe she had told Fred to give her a bit much too time to prepare. The writer already had hiking clothes on and a backpack full of everything she needed, so where the hell was Fred when she needed him? But luckily, just as she was starting to get truly annoyed, the phone that she had stuffed in her pocket started vibrating, and she pulled it out to read the text from Fred. The minimal amount of words made her smile, and she grabbed her backpack before tearing out the door and down the stairs of the little dorm building that her college had given her a room in. ”Fred!” she called, waving and slowing down to a jog when she exited the building. ”You're late,” she scolded, failing to hide the smile that was spreading across her face at the sight of him. No, they weren't romantically involved or anything, but being around someone like Fred just made her happy. There was no other way to describe it. She threw her backpack into the back seat before opening the door to the passenger side of the car and clambering in, giving Fred a quick kiss on the cheek. French custom, right? Even if she would never get used to the speed of things here, it didn't mean that she wasn't completely oblivious to what the rules and traditions were.

Fred made a lot of friends but it wasn’t a sure thing he would keep them all. Being the social guy he was, he liked to hang around people making people laugh and feel comfortable, but when it came to being close… well he didn’t have that many. Fred wasn’t a reserved kind of guy, but he wasn’t completely open, he liked to joke and be around people but if you stopped and gave thought to what you know about him you will realize he didn’t give many personal details. Fred was the kind of person who will listen to people, help them with their problems, help them feel comfortable and happy but he won’t sure much unless asked to. He was a gentleman, especially with girls, and her mother taught him that listening was a better way to keep them happy than talking. With Madi though he could be a normal eighteen guy and be a bit mischievous, tease her a bit, joke around… she was a great friend to have and she never said he was crazy for throwing random plans at any given moment, in fact Madi agreed to most of them.
He had planned where they were going, well not planned, he thought about it while driving to her house. Of course he found traffic in the way which was only there to annoy him. Fred was kind of relaxed but when he had random idea it was to carry it out at the very moment and things slowing him down annoyed him a bit. He didn’t like to be late to places, and he hated to make Madi wait but there was nothing he could do about this so he tried to patiently wait tapping the wheel with his fingers. Fred was taking her to Les gorges du Houx, it was an hour by car to Fontainebleau, and then about fours of hiking. He liked the views and the trails, and it wasn’t a very difficult one so they get to talk to each other and not focus much on what they were doing. Finally he got there, texted Madi and smiled when got into the car. Faking being hurt by her words though it was true he was late. “I am! I found traffic in the way, and I was giving you more time to get ready since you are a girl.” He winked at her obviously a joke and smiling when she kissed his cheek.
Fred had been raised in France with the lifestyle and the traditions and he was a very sweet and touchy person, but that was a trait he had from his mother. In fact he looked a lot like his mother, maybe because it was her the most important figure in his life until she passed away. She was very important for him and maybe something in him knew he was going to lose her, that’s why he learnt so much from her and saved so many good memories. As her started to drive to where they were going memories keep popping into his mind. “Play with the radio and get comfortable, we have an hour to get there.” He didn’t know much about Madison’s family, in fact and coming to think of it he didn’t know much about her, they spend some quality time together but always joking and never getting into personal matters, they were both too cheerful to need to cheer up the other and if she had problems she never came to him to ask for her or simply vent to feel better. But their friendship didn’t need to be that kind of friendship, it was easy and natural and he knew they trusted each other enough to go to the other if they ever needed to.
