It wasn’t the first time they were meeting for a coffee, even though Heloise swore to herself she wasn’t going to ever speak to him again her feelings took the best of her. She had worked very hard for that image of cold heartless bitch, so hard and for so long that she had come to believe it herself. Tommy had some influence in the fact that lately she had started to… have a truce with her feelings, for a lack of a better term and that’s why she had accepted coffee with him last time and accepted it again now. Was it that bad to have feelings? Well it wasn’t particularly good either, it was the way to get hurt and the way to lose people and being human and she didn’t want that at all. Heloise was having a bit of a hard time readjusting to all of this, all her new discovered feelings and accepting the ones she discovered long ago and tried to bury deep inside her with no luck whatsoever. She had to face and accept those feelings, she had fallen for Simeon but she couldn’t and wouldn’t call it love she knew it was a strong like and she respected him. She noticed the difference between the respect she had for Tommy and she soft friendship feelings she had for the boy with the ones she had for Simeon; even with Tommy being gay she never thought of making a move towards him, but with Simeon she did and she allowed, welcome and encouraged them to the point of sleeping with him.
Heloise blushed as she walked down the streets towards the place they were supposed to meet. Neutral ground so they both could feel comfortable and without alcohol in the equation there was no chance for them to act like they did back at the club. She didn’t have an idea of what they were going to talk, she didn’t even know how she was going to act or react to his presence but she was going to try her best being sarcastic, keep her walls up if not all the way up at least enough to protect herself. Or maybe she could finally drop them and be happy, cling to the path she had found and be different from what her mother and everyone else expected of her, give her life a turn and do the same thing she did with Tommy, smile and laugh and for once be comfortable and happy, be herself. Heloise wasn’t really sure she could do that because with Simeon everything had been sarcasm, mind games, wounding each other and so far it had worked well enough. Opening the door to the place she was greeted by warmth and the smell of coffee and pastries, she smiled a little and looked around for an empty table to sit. She had arrived a earlier, she didn’t feel comfortable being the last one, sitting there and analyze the situation worked better for her.
Asking for a cappuccino she sat on an empty table and looked around her. No known faces, no one around she had to pretend for… safe place. She offered a small smile to the waitress that served her the coffee with some macaroons and took a sip to it allowing the hot liquid down her throat, she felt warm and happy and for once relaxed as if she wasn’t waiting for someone to attack her or she wasn’t at war, for once she wasn’t thinking nasty and she didn’t have to protect herself, she was alone in her thoughts when she heard the door open and the waitress welcoming someone with her pitch voice. She raised her eyes from the window to the door and sure enough Simeon was there, she didn’t bother moving knowing his eyes will find her soon enough and come to the table she was sitting at, and she was right. “Hello, nice to see you again.” She pointed to the free chair and sipped from her coffee again with a small smile playing on her lips, surprisingly enough Heloise enjoyed the feeling in her stomach, she was really feeling comfortable.

Things were weird with Simeon, lately. That was the only way he could describe it. Pitiful, really, considering he was a third-year writing major. But, try as he might, "weird" was what he was left with. He was in no danger of being expelled from the Academy, he hadn't even been in trouble for anything lately. He had gotten away with things, but not in trouble. His tolerance levels for people had grown, so he was angry less often. And then there was Heloise. They had reached some sort of stalemate. A truce. Things were different from before, though. Not better, necessarily, just... different. They met periodically and acted politely, but only as polite as was natural for them. Simeon still felt comfortable around her, but there was something else, too. A heightened awareness. Simeon never felt awkward, but when he was around Heloise he felt like he was entering unfamiliar territory. He didn't know what to expect anymore. But it was still better than nothing. He liked being around her, despite the feeling of being out of his depth. For once, he didn't need to be fully in control all or the time. All in all, Simeon was happy.
And that would have been fine, except that Simeon had a fucked up mentality when it came to happiness. He was a self-serving bastard, but he was also a self-destructive fool. Every decision he made was geared toward being rewarding in the short-term but very damaging in the long-term. He didn't plan it that way, but it had been happening for so long that he didn't know any other way. He was far too arrogant to believe that he needed to punish himself; even unconsciously this was not his goal. He simply did not know how to be happy, and whenever he was it was closely followed by a feeling of impending doom. If that disaster didn't come immediately, he grew restless and provoked it, just to escape the feeling.
When it came down to it, Simeon feared the unknown. As long as he was wrecking havoc in his own life, he knew what to expect. He saw how people carefully built up their happy little lives and thought they had things under control, but the slightest disturbance sent them spiraling down. If you were already riding that downward spiral then there was nothing to fear.
So, even though Simeon was technically happy, he was deeply troubled at the same time. Walking through Paris to meet Heloise for coffee, he was just touching the surface of these issues. He hadn't had the will to sit down and actually examine his situation, because Simeon never did things carefully. He felt something and then acted on it, but lately he didn't have the motivation to lash out and destroy. More than anything he wanted to keep things moving forward with Heloise. That was what had his attention now. She didn't realize it, but she was tempering his desire to fuck up his life for the sake of continuity. He was actually making an effort to make things work, for what seemed to be the first time in his life.
Simeon pushed open the door to the cafe, his eyes settling on the woman behind the coffee counter. He never looked around immediately after entering a room. He just paused, giving the girl a polite nod and smile. She greeted him brightly, making him wonder is she had excellent face-recognition and just remembered him from the last time he was here, or if she did that with everyone. Simeon smirked as he turned into the cafe; he preferred to think that he was special. He found Heloise right away; the cafe wasn't very full, and Heloise stood out anyway. She had a commanding presence about her. He settled into the chair opposite her, the smirk still playing across his face. He ignored the pleasantries, jumping right into conversation with, "I think the barista has a thing for me." As that same girl stopped by to take his order, he asked for a latte, then sat back in his chair and looked at Heloise smugly as if to say, "see?"
His eyes were filled with repressed laughter, making it obvious that he was joking. Pushing buttons, yes, but all in good humor. Once his coffee arrived he sipped it gratefully, commenting to Heloise, "Getting over the last of a hangover. Cheers."

Changing, that’s what Heloise was doing and right at the worst moment. All her life she had been a cold heartless bitch and she rejoiced on that, she took pride of not having feelings at all, she was content with her fairly simple life and the way she was leading it, and now she was changing the course of her life to a different path, one she didn’t like much because it made her weak and vulnerable but there was no denying it, she was way happier. Why was the worst moment for a change? Because after what happened in the academy her mother would be forced to step off her headmistress position and give it to her once the year was over. Heloise never wanted that position in the first place and though her mother was very proud of seeing her take over the family business she always wanted something different. If she was headmistress she had to be the way she had been raised to be, there was no room for weakness and no run for being happy.
Still, and even after her mother announced her in private her future and the future of the academy, Heloise kept meeting with Simeon knowing that will only make her weakest. Tommas was the reason she had started to develop some kind of feelings and come to terms with them. She was taking one step at a time but she was making progress and now she smiled and even laughed, she went partying to have fun and had someone she could call… friend and that she more or less trusted. Simeon was a dangerous guy to trust and a bad step would be the end of the fragile thing they had whatever it was, they managed to get pass what happened last time somehow because in all honesty she could not seeing him. Little after starting ignoring Simeon, Heloise realized she had feelings for him, she had them and she missed him because it was one of the few intelligent people she could have a conversation with. She didn’t think things through much, she didn’t really want to think about what it meant or the consequences it would bring to her life. Taking a sip of her coffee she started to think about it all, her reputation or whatever she had, and if being seen with Simeon would damage it. Once the damage was done, once that step was taken or the line crossed, there was no going back at all.
Heloise didn’t have much time to think about it though because just as his name was crossing her mind he entered the place and took a seat in front of her jumping straight to conversation. And for the first time in his presence without the alcohol playing a role and without something backing her up, Heloise smiled genuinely at him, a real smile and it had been a natural reaction to his jokingly manner and his ways. Raising an eyebrow she looked at the barista and shook her head. “I think your ego has grown quite a lot.” She wasn’t jealous, honestly Simeon was one fine man girls liked to stare at and flirt with and they didn’t have something going on for her to be jealous. “I can’t even remember what a hangover is. Cheers.” Last time she hang out it ended up… well, she ended up fighting with Tommy, not exactly fighting but she left. She took a long sip of her coffee closing her eyes and smiling again. She was comfortable, she was really comfortable with him and though she knew she shouldn’t it was what she felt and well, honestly, she was tired of faking, pretending and ignoring what she felt. She had always been cold and heartless and that wasn’t going to change with the rest of the people but it was going to change with people she was close with, just Simeon and Tommy.
“I don’t think you are her type, or maybe she has a thing for all the boys that come in.” What a job, having to smile all the time and be nice to everyone, she wouldn’t be able to do such a thing because she hated human beings and their weakness and it was easier for her to make them cry than to make them laugh. “So you went partying yesterday, found something interesting?”

One reason Simeon knew that things had changed between them was that he wasn't interested in seeing Heloise fail. He didn't want her to falter; he wanted to see her succeed. It wasn't a totally unselfish desire, though. They were too similar. As long as she was able to hold out then he should be in good shape as well. He knew the recent school attack and subsequent fallout was putting tremendous strain on her entire family, and now was probably as good a time as any to try to push buttons and kick out the supports from under her. However, he really didn't want to. Not only that: he couldn't. He didn't think she trusted him, which was fair. Their entire relationship up until recently had been based on a constant mental battle. Now that he didn't want to fight any more, he didn't expect her to forget that and just accept that things were different. Simeon had never been in love. He didn't know what it felt like. What he did know was that he actually cared about something, about someone, and it was very unfamiliar. He was a person who had focused solely on himself all his life, and had never cared who he hurt. Now he had found another person that he didn't want to harm. If he tried to tell her that, though, would she just laugh in his face and call him a fool?
That was his biggest hold-up. He was fairly certain that his feelings were mutual, but while he was ready to roll with the punches and adapt to this new dynamic, he wasn't so sure about Heloise. Where he was flexible, she was completely rigid. She would try to deny this, and resist the change. As frustrating as that thought was, he was reluctant to force the issue and risk alienating her permanently. He laughed quietly at her comment on his ego, neither agreeing nor disagreeing. He did raise his eyebrows lightly in surprise when she said she didn't remember what a hangover was. That was unacceptable. He was distracted momentarily when she mentioned the barista again, though. He smirked again, saying, "I'm everybody's type. Absolutely irresistible." He glanced over his shoulder to where the young woman was tallying up some numbers behind the counter. When he turned back he shrugged. "Or maybe she does do that with every guy. It doesn't really make a difference."
He shrugged again, dismissively, at her question. He honestly hated talking about himself, unless he had something to brag about. Which, in this case, he did not. "Not really. Some guy tried to sell me some cocaine, but there was an undercover cop on the street so I doubt he made much money last night... But what about you? When was the last time you had some fun?" He leaned forward as he finished speaking, all attention turned to her. Simeon wasn't the dating+relationship type. He was more the one-night-stand type that you never heard from or saw again. And if you did he would be dismissive and probably ignore. Not so much out of disrespect, just lack of interest in anything else. He usually tried to find like-minded individuals, but there was always a chance he'd choose unwisely. With Heloise, it was different. It was always different. She was quickly becoming the exception to every rule he lived by. Why he wasn't sprinting in the opposite direction was a mystery to him.
Suddenly remembering that Heloise had gone out with someone else last he had heard, he tilted his head quizzically. "How's Tommy doing?" he asked as he sipped his latte. He didn't like Tommy. He wasn't going to lie. Despite not meeting him in person, Simeon had an opinion on him. The guy was crazy, probably an alcoholic, and riddled with issues. But if he was actually Hel's friend he wasn't going to share his opinion for now. Partly because he didn't want her thinking he was jealous. He wasn't, not exactly, he just thought he offered better company than a drunk gay man.

Thinking was proving to be useless once emotions were involved. Heloise had always casted her emotions aside to be able to think things clearly and it always worked but now she couldn’t separate her feelings from her reasoning because what she was trying to understand was exactly that. Her family was going through quite a big scandal and their reputation was damaged, though her father had controlled things right away and her mother also managed to calm down the situation things were the way they were and it was hard to control all the damage. Heloise should be stressed and running from place to place to solve things, she should be worried about it all but she was far from that, first because she didn’t care about the reputation of her family and second because she had managed to stay away from it, her reputation was fine so she was fine. She was conscious of her position and how vulnerable she was in front of Simeon and how he could use that to his advantage. But there she was, sitting in front of him with coffee in her hands, smiling and inviting him to hurt her and that was enough of a confession about her feelings, she was confessing she had them in the first place.
And she trusted him, she trusted Simeon not to hurt her even though he clearly had where to aim. A small sideways smile spread across her face when he didn’t deny about his ego. Both of them were pretty much egocentric persons who cared only about themselves and that was about it, and she was in foreign ground caring about Simeon but it wasn’t as foreign to her as it was for him because Heloise had been human once. Back in New York four years ago she had a normal life and friends and laughed and was happy, though it only lasted the time she was there and once back in Paris she became again the heartless bitch. “Oh yes, sure, look how all girls fall for you at sight.” She smirked and shook her head. Simeon hated talking about his life as much as she hated talking about hers but one of them would have to give the other ground of they will end up in silence. Heloise didn’t share information of her personal life, not even what she liked or dislike aside from the obvious, but she was going to have to share a bit more if she wanted this to work somehow.
“When I hanged around Tommas, it’s not like I had time for anything else lately.” She was out of the problem at the academy but she was definitely taking over her mother so Heloise spent all her time following her mother and getting ready to take over the position. And she was so tired of it all. She didn’t want to talk about that, she could share personal information but that, she never wanted to be headmistress and only thinking about it made her shiver. But he provided her an escape by changing the subject and she smirked again. The way he talked about Tommy, she could tell he didn’t like him but she was sure he knew Tommy enough to know he was gay, still he seemed to be… jealous because she spent more time with him and considered Tommy a friend, something she never considered Simeon over the years they were together. “Tommy’s fine, thanks for asking.” She said laughing and raising her eyebrow. “I hadn’t spend much time around him lately though or around anyone else for that matter.”
Heloise really enjoyed being around Tommy, mostly because it was him the one who encouraged her to have some feelings and be comfortable around them and he tried for her to see at the positive side of things. At first she was wary but he managed to make her laugh and that was great progress, aside from the little… fight they had when they were drunk and decided to go on chat, a really bad idea honestly, she had felt quite comfortable around him and even managed to apologize for the first time in… a very long time. “I actually have quite a good time around him, though you know already because that little chat incident. He is a good friend.” Heloise laughed, using the word ‘friend’ and applied it to someone like Tommy felt weird, if someone could ruin her reputation that was Tommy and well, she didn’t mind at all this time.
