HISTORY, Zaharia was born in The Bronx of New York City to her parents Joe and Anne who were drug addicts, Zaharia watched her parents going through their addiction until one morning Zaharia, who was five at the time, found both of her parents dead from a drug overdose the night before. Two days after her parents had died social services came to her apartment and found Zaharia asleep on the mattress that was in her room, she was taken from the apartment and her parents’ bodies were moved. Zaharia was placed in an orphanage where she was abused and watched others being abused daily by the other girls and the staff members, at the age of seven Zaharia had her left arm broken by one of the staff members slamming her into a wall when she was walking to breakfast. She didn’t receive medical attention for the break until a week later, even though she lived in the orphanage Zaharia was sent to school everyday with bruises, cuts and second hand clothing. Zaharia has scars all over her body from the abuse she sustained.
At the age of thirteen Zaharia was attacked and raped by one of the male staff members in the orphanage, she was sent to school the next day as if nothing happened. After school Zaharia decided not to return to the orphanage and began living on the streets, she ate out of rubbish bins and worked for a few dollars a night as a dish pig in a large restaurant while continuing to go to school as if nothing was wrong. Living on the streets taught Zaharia to be street smart, where to sleep at night and where not to go. Even so Zaharia ended up in street fights and fell in with a bad crowd who got her into drugs and self harm, at the age of seventeen she was picked up by the police for a drunken disorderly and for carrying drugs. She was taken to hospital where she stayed for a few days before a kind nurse offered to look after her, Zaharia was suspicious of the woman but agreed in the end. At the woman’s house Zaharia met the nurses husband, staying with them for the night Zaharia awoke to find the husband in the room she had been given. He was drunk and attacked her. Zaharia fled the house and went back to the streets where she knew she was safe, using some of the money she had saved she bought herself a guitar and a ticket to Paris. Once she arrived in Paris Zaharia got a job and worked until she was eighteen and applied to get into La Lumineuse but was rejected until she applied again and was accepted. Zaharia continued to work in a restaurant that hired her and live on the streets while attending La Lumineuse.
