The last week had actually gone better than she had expected it to be. Although she was still sick, she was still missing a lot of school and really needed to catch up with her work; she just couldn’t be asked. What was the point when she had already missed so much? She knew that once she got back into the schedule of being at school and the environment that the Academy always produced, she would start working her way through the piles of homework that was slowly building up on her desk. All the assignments were done, the writing ones, the one where she needed to think a lot. She just needed photos as back up but because she was sick, she couldn’t be asked. Who would be if they felt like hurling every time they woke up every odd day? It was surprising that she had been sick for two weeks; her third one right now because Scarlett was hardly ever sick.
She knew that she had a strong immune system, that there was no way her body would allow these viruses and bacteria to mutilate her and make her feel horrible, but it seemed as if her strengths were weakening and it was annoying as well as slightly bizarre. The last time she had been sick for this long was…well never. But at least today was a good day for her. She was currently up and in the kitchen, looking in the cupboards to find something good to eat; she had put on a few pounds which made her look slightly bigger and made her clothes just a tiny bit tight because of all the junk food that she had been consuming, but hopefully a few nights and days at the gym would help her to shed it off quite quickly. Even though she was surprised, Simeon was actually right and she would turn fat from all the ice cream and food that she had bought.
Opening one of her smaller cupboards, she tiptoed up grab a flour tortilla wrap, she was going to make herself chicken quesadillas; for once in the entire three weeks, she was going to eat something proper and mainly because she felt like eating something proper; proper and spicy. The heat was on already for the pan. Grabbing a chopping board and a knife, she placed it carefully on the counter and grabbed two onions, peeling them and chopping quite fast. She actually did know how to cook, people just assumed that she didn’t and she went along with it. They thought because of her extrovert personality, she was somewhat of a fail in the kitchen, which made her want to laugh because they had no idea of the littlest delicacies that she could create with her imaginative mind. Adding in the onions, she chopped one small garlic clove, some peppers, chilies and tomatoes and then added in extra oil. Closing her eyes, she let out a long ‘mmm’, she didn’t have to worry about people looking at her weirdly – though she didn’t mind – because she was at home and the house smelt great now. Mouth watering even. Sighing, she leaned against the counter for a few seconds to let the mix and let out another sigh. It was nice to be alone but she did miss people.

Busy, that was the definition of her life now. But it was a very different kind of busy than before. Anouk was full of assignments, essays, a project… school was mad lately and she had to look for time to spend with Alexei and her friends. She was failing miserably on the friends department. Scarlett had been sick and she had visited her only once, she didn’t even notice she was gone until her friend complained because well, Anouk didn’t have the time to notice those things anymore. Since she started dating Alexei and stopped attending to parties she had slowly became a hermit just like him and she hated that, she made a mental note of going out more, with or without him. Today after class Anouk thought of passing by Scarlett’s apartment to see how she was doing since the last time she visited her and hoped to find her better than that day. It was horrible, how much she missed her old life, at first with all the emotions and the new things in her relationship Anouk had been distracted enough not to notice but now that it was becoming routine her urges started to scream out loud. Yes, she missed her party life, she missed alcohol, getting drunk, not having to worry all the time, being free in some ways… don’t misunderstand her, she loved being tied down to Alexei, it had been her dream all along, her goal and the thing she had aimed for and she was happy beyond words being with him but old habits die hard and she had a lot of bad old habits.
Alexei was the only one who made Anouk feel complete, forget her friends and family, if she was stuck in an island she would only need him, and he was the only one she would miss if she was all alone, to the point she will get sick. Walking down the street to Scarlett’s apartment she thought about how things were going in her life so far… the good things were more than the bad ones, but the bad ones were bigger enough to make her feel horrible. Alexei and her spent a lot of time fighting and she hoped Scarlett could help her throw some light to the matter, find a way to fix things. Scarlett was rather bubbly and energetic, even Anouk had a hard time following her pace and that was saying a lot. She had crazy creative ideas and some scary ideas. She had been there all along, and encouraged her with everything; they always found a way to get things running. Anouk had always been a very positive girl, no worries, no regrets, absolute freedom; being with Alexei had changed her a lot and she couldn’t place if the change had been for the better or for the worst. She knocked the door, calling her friend, tempted to use the key but Scarlett was inside so there was no need. Her friend opened the door and Anouk smiled at her, she was looking much better than before. “Well, I can see you are looking better. What’s that smell?” She knew Scarlett could cook, so she entered the apartment looking with curiosity at the kitchen too see what was she cooking this time.

Once the first week was up, Scarlett decided not to really call her friends any more, it was obvious they were busy with their own lives and had no reason to get involved with hers. It was surprising that once she had become ill, she was turning back into the old Scarlett, the one who hardly spoke and went through everything alone no matter how painful it was. She had only one person who was comfort for a day, Simeon, though it was for a day, he was the only one who had managed to brighten up at least one day of her sickening three weeks; and what he had said had stuck inside her head. Maybe she was really annoying, maybe people had gotten bored of her or maybe people didn’t need her anymore. She was just someone who was easily used and chucked to the side. Her mom was right when she used degrading terms on her, she just wasn’t anyone in the world and there would be no one to help her at all once she became older; it was just something that was normal. It was just a bit surprising that Simeon be right really, it seemed as if her friends didn’t want to do anything with her anymore and slowly Scarlett had actually become so sure of it that she had turned her phone off for a few days. The only time someone had texted her during her sickness was when he or she needed help for his or her relationships and that was that. Scarlett was just being taken advantage of and then thrown to the corner. Maybe that was all she was? Help until someone better came along?
This week she had pushed Anouk, Maureen, Alexei, Simeon and all those so called ‘friends’ of hers to the side and focused on herself, what was needed now was for her to get better and go back to La Luminese, though she was sure that once she was interacting with more people she’d forget how low she felt during the past two weeks and go back to her new self, the one that always partied and focused on chatting quite a bit about everything and anything. She hoped actually that she wouldn’t get better for another week or so, she would have liked to join up with the old Scarlett once more and just sit and control and organise her own thoughts just to make herself a better person, it would be great that way for her. Even though she had never wanted to go back to her old self, she did miss it, she missed the part where she didn’t speak much and where she didn’t have to paint a smile on her face all the time or even when she didn’t have to make sure all her friends were alright even though she wasn’t alright herself. A sudden tapping on the door disrupted her reconciliation with her old self and thoughts and she looked up slightly annoyed. Seriously? No one came to visit her for the past three weeks and they came when she finally enjoyed it? It seemed as if things hardly ever went her way now.
Painting a smile on her face, and ripping a tissue from the tissue roll, she blew her nose before walking towards the door. It was a good thing she was a good actor; she should have probably even gone onto drama when she chose her course, but photography was her life. “Chicken quesadillas, want some?” Turning around, she walked back to the kitchen, slightly hesitant in sharing her food, but she had to, it was polite to do so. “Good to see you again, for a second I thought you disappeared off of the face of the Earth.” Letting out a little chuckle, she began chopping up chicken pieces and washing them off of any skin pieces that she didn’t like before putting them into the pan and stirring it with a pan to let everything marinate together.

All these week Anouk had been from place to place taking care of things. Between school, Alexei and Nick her timetable was absolutely full. Scarlett didn’t tell her she was sick at first and she didn’t see her friend around much in the school as a daily basis so she hadn’t really noticed she wasn’t attending. Yes, Anouk failed a bit as a friend the past weeks but she had a lot of things in mind. She had to met Oren for her watercolor project which took a while to figure out, then she had to spend time with Alexei to have him happy, weekends were reserved for Nick since it was barely the only time they could see each other. All in all Anouk didn’t have time to herself or to spare. Once Scarlett scolded her she went for a visit to bring her soup and take care of her friend and made sure to send her a text on a daily basis. But still Anouk had too much things to handle and little time. When Alexei and her decided to move in together she started to look for apartments they could rent and so on, which consumed the little free time she had. She hadn’t seen anyone besides her two boys and Oren and her parents and even those she hadn’t see much. It was time to have a nice chat with her friend who clearly had the right to be mad at her.
Sighing she followed Scarlett to the kitchen, she was a great actress but you can’t cheat a cheater and Anouk was the master of lying. So she knew her friend wasn’t happy to see her and of course she knew Scarlett didn’t want to share her food. Anouk wasn’t hungry anyway so turning down her offer wasn’t going to be a difficult thing. Lately it was as if everyone was mad at her no matter the effort she did. She leaned against the wall making a face and snickering a bit. Crossing her arms above her chest she looked at other side. “No thanks, I’m not hungry.” Anouk thought she was getting her appetite back and she discovered otherwise, she was just hungry sometimes, and some nausea still reminded, withdrawal was harder than she had thought. “I’’ve been really busy, with all the school works and everything. I just didn’t have any time.” She rubbed her eyes a little, really tired because she had come here directly from the school. “You have the right to be mad at me. If you know me you know it wasn’t on purpose.”
She went to site on a chair and watched her cook, tapping her fingers against the table. She had enough fights for a month or more, she didn’t need a fight with her friend too. “Do you need help with that? Or the homework? I went to the photography class and asked for the projects for you in case you didn’t receive the homework and such.” She opened her bag and placed the documents in the table so she could see them, she was a good friend after all, the first visit she brought her soup and now she brought all her homework and things, well she cared about Scarlett, she just didn’t have any time to show it. “Are you feeling better or not?” She took her mobile out of her bag and switched her mobile off so it won’t disturb them. This was her time for her friend and her, because Scarlett deserved it.

It seemed that no one had actually missed her while she was away, the only time someone ever spoke to her during the past weeks was when they were sending her homework, she knew she wasn’t a great deal in a lot of people’s lives, that she was just another class mate, or another friend on the side, but she liked to think that she was of at least some importance in at least one of her friends’ lives. But maybe she wasn’t, who knew what people thought of her. Sometimes, she just really wished people did like her instead of tolerate her, she knew a lot of people disliked her because of her loud attitude, but it was the way she was now. If she went back to her normal self, she would be seen as a freak and she’d rather be hated or disliked by some than be seen as a freak and pushed away by others.
Having a quarter of an appetite while she had been sick, Scarlett realized how much she had missed her food and she didn’t want to share it. The things she was cooking was amazing, it smelt great and her stomach grumbled loudly over the sizzles that came from the pan on the stove. She looked at Anouk, she felt bad for feeling like that, maybe Anouk was actually pretty busy but Scarlett still felt as if she had every right to be angry. She wanted to be angry, but she couldn’t stay mad for that long could she? Nodding her head, she placed the chicken pieces into the pan and began mixing the solution she was making, adding a few more chilis and some spice powder; she mixed it again with a spoon. At least no one was taking her food from her. “Mhm, everyone’s been busy lately.” Grabbing a roll, she made sure it was soft and fluffy before putting it on a plate and then turned her attention back to the filling she was working on. “I know, I know.” She always had to forgive people it was annoying, even though Scarlett felt angry she knew she’d have to forgive Anouk sooner or later. She always bloody did.
She didn’t bother looking at Anouk as the girl made her way to a chair, after all, Anouk knew her apartment inside out and there was no need for Scarlett to act all formal and what not. Letting the cubes of meat marinate for a few more minutes, she swirled it around once more before turning off the heat. “No, I don’t need help, I’m already done anyway.” Eyeing the documents, she sighed. “I already got my homework from another student but thanks, I think in my hazy state I deleted all the assignments anyway.” Rolling her eyes at her stupidity she filled her spoon with her filling before placing a bit on the roll. Filling it a bit more, she moved to her refrigerator before grabbing the ketchup bottle so she could place it over the food. Once that was done, she began rolling it into a wrap shape. She did the same with one more before moving towards her couch with her plate. Shuffling, she leaned back into her sofa before settling herself comfortable. Taking a bite of her food, she closed her eyes and let out a groan. “I am feeling much better, I can finally taste food! God this is yummy. How are things going with you?”

If Scarlett wanted to be mad at her, so it be. Anouk wasn’t going to do a thing to make her change her mind at all. Even if she was tired and had enough in her plate she knew she well deserved it. Anouk never had a problem with Scarlett before or any of her friends, but these months had been plain exhausted for her, and lately it was just getting harder and harder. With all the fights and the planning and everything she just couldn’t bring herself to wake up half of the days and just thinking about what was coming got her even more exhausted. Not to mention she had been pretty weak lately, because the fights got all her energy and that didn’t help to her recovery one little bit, not at all. Not that she was going to tell anyone, it was easier to deal with it on her own that having them watching her every move in case she got depressed again and tried to kill herself, something she wasn’t going to do. She rubbed the back of her neck, uncomfortable at her friends tone, she wanted to her the truth but she couldn’t. “I can’t speak for the rest, I can only speak for me.” It wasn’t such a tragedy, after all Anouk did visited her once while she was sick and brought her soup and spend the afternoon there taking care of her. That time Scarlett had feel awful and couldn’t even speak properly and they had great laughs watching her struggle to get her voice right or at least her words to be understandable.
She stopped tapping her fingers, moving her hand to the other and crossing her fingers together leaving the documents aside. “That’s so you. It would have been better to wait until you could at least see what you were doing though.” She suppressed the urge to laugh not knowing if her friend would take offense, Anouk had never been one of sugarcoating things, she spoke her mind and if someone took offense in what she said well it was their problem not hers. But with Scarlett she was on the watch because she didn’t want more fights, that wouldn’t do any good. She turned her body on the chair, it was close enough for them to talk but far enough to give them some space, she didn’t want to step into her space right now, and honestly she wasn’t feeling like letting someone step into hers either. She laughed at her comment and shook her head, a small on her face that she had to keep doing her best when she asked her how was she doing. “I’m glad you can finally taste food.” She tried to think of a way to put it, but she didn’t really had a way, so she shrugged her shoulders as if her life wasn’t big deal. “You know, here and there, working, essays, projects, painting… same as always.” She didn’t comment about Alexei or Nick, she wasn’t feeling up to revive all the discussion she had lately. “I called dad, he is doing great, and he asked about you, sent his best wishes.” Trying to shake the attention off her she changed topic to another one. “ What about you? Did you have time to catch up with books you never had time to read or play computer games? That’s what I do when I’m sick.”
The mention of her father made her remember she had been thinking of moving in with him for a while lately, but Anouk couldn’t bring herself to leave Alexei, not after seeing the way he reacted to a single weekend without her, and not after seeing how she reacted too. It was pretty clear she couldn’t live without him. Making a face at her thoughts she focused on her friend and tried to offer her a smile. It was a god thing she was a great actress.

To be honest, during her sick time, Scarlett had gone into depression than she ever really had and she had no idea why. She didn’t want to go to a therapist or the doctors in case they referred her to some mental ward because obviously it seemed as if there was nothing wrong with Scarlett’s life right? At the moment she didn’t really bother to care about her friends’ lives, why should she when she had her own problems? But she would because that’s what a good friend did, forget about her own problems and then rush off to her friends to find out what was happening with them and whether they were happy or not. Nodding her head as Anouk told her that the girl could only vouch for herself and none of the other friends that Scarlett shared with her or had on her own, she let out another sigh. Why was it whenever she needed someone she always had to be left alone? Not that Scarlett would tell anyone she needed them after all, she had to keep up the strong girl image that everyone saw her as, she couldn’t let them see her otherwise or then it’d all be over for her and she didn’t want that. She just wanted a nice, simple life for once, but when did that ever happen?
Rolling her eyes at her friends’ words, she leaned back in her seat; her bottom right at the corner of the sofa and her head against the headrest while her legs straightened themselves on the sofa. Letting out a sigh before she took another bite of her food, she looked at Anouk. “Yes, I should have…but that’s not me right?” Raising an eyebrow with a small smile on her face, Scarlett chewed her food carefully and slowly, just in case she had the urge to puke again – which she so didn’t want. She may have been appreciating her food right now but it was only because for the past few weeks she could only eat small amounts of food until she puked it all out, she took antibiotics, aspirin and whatever else she could find but she wouldn’t go to the doctors’ and it seemed like her method worked, she was already getting better! Not that she would tell anyone that this was what she was doing, they would probably think she was trying to overdose on pills or something, which she wasn’t because Scarlett did love life…she just didn’t love it right at that very moment. “I am too, but I made it too spicy.” Wrinkling her nose a little, she coughed slightly before settling herself back onto the sofa with an arm over her head.
Nodding her head as Anouk listed the things she always did, Scarlett nodded her head.“That’s nice, how are things going between you and Alex? More fights?” She raised an eyebrow and smiled when the topic of Anouk’s dad came up, “Awww your dad’s so adorable, how is he and the new wife?” Taking another bite of her food, Scarlett put the plate on the table beside her and got up, walking towards the fridge and grabbing a carton of orange juice out, filling two glasses with the juice, she put the carton back into the fridge and walked towards Anouk, handing the girl one glass before making her way to her place on the sofa and sitting back down. Taking a sip of the drink, she let the coolness flow down her body and let out a small sigh. God that felt great. “I was sick dude, I couldn’t even open my eyes, all I did was lie down on the bed and listen to SpongeBob everyday on the television,”

Anouk remembered her time during depression and how she refused all help, she was sure she could make it alone and she had the support of Alexei which was the main source of strength. Lately with all the fights with Alexei and everything that had been going on she was surprised depression didn’t take the best of her but no, she was stronger than she thought. Anouk never relied on her friends, she never asked their help when she most needed them, no, because she didn’t want to be a burden for them, she didn’t want them to know her problems and she could solve them alone… most of the time. “You’re right.” She said with a small laugh. She hadn’t been feeling properly hungry in a while, though she did get part of the appetite she used to have, it was a sign that she was already feeling better from her withdrawal and things were slowly going back to normal. “It smells good.” Anouk shrugged her shoulders and took a look around her, it had feel like an eternity since she had been here but it hadn’t been that much, in fact it had been only a few days ago or so when she came to bring her friend some soup and take care of her for a while.
Of course Scarlett had to ask about Alexei, the very topic Anouk had been trying so hard to avoid. “Things are fine.” She said and didn’t comment further, first because she wasn’t up to and second because Scarlett wasn’t the one who had to solve things between Alexei and her, so no, Anouk wasn’t going to tell her friend her problems, she was tired of that, tired of having to rely on others and reveal her personal life. Alexei would inform her anyway, and then he could complain and say whatever he wanted. “They are great. Dad said they went to the Solomon Islands and a great time.” Anouk bit her lip, her father had suggested he would move there because of work for a few months and had offered to take her with him, it would stupid to deny she had been tempted, because of course she had been. It was a tropical paradise of clear waters and white sand that promised peace and quiet. “Dad is moving with her there in a few months time.” She bit her lip again, she didn’t want to tell Scarlett the offer her father had done, her eyes wandered around the room, avoiding look at her friend until her mind settle down, she was good at pretending but lately she had lost practice.
She took the glass of juice her friend gave her and took a sip of it. “Spongebob… I didn’t even have time for television though, being sick would be like a much needed break.” But Anouk never fell ill, just a few times in her life and if she never fell ill when she lived that fast paced life of hers there was no way she could fall ill now. “I swear I managed things back then, when my life was always busy but I was used to that… this low pace life is going to kill me.” She laughed bitterly, trying to hide it. How could she think her life would be better once she got together with Alexei? How could she think she was better off the thing she did, the places she belonged to? Sure she felt she belonged to Alexei and there was nothing else in the world she wanted… but old habits die hard and that had been her life after all, and she had to change it completely from day to night. “Once you are out of your sickness you can always go to your normal life, but how come you got sick when you never do?”
