PERSONALITY,
david can be one of the sweetest people in the world when he's comfortable around someone, but it takes a while to get him to that state. when he first meets someone, dave is normally always quiet and reserved; even more so around women. he lets his sister do most of the talking, though he'll sometimes man up and talk to the parents when she's busy doing manager-like things. he rarely goes out of his way to talk to socialize, but he'll at least try to have a decent conversation with anyone that approaches him. to be fair, he isn't an unlikeable person, even if he's shy. really, dave is quite open minded, and just goes with the flow of most things. david never goes looking for a fight, but he'll get defensive if someone else tries to start one. while he can't exactly be called violent (actually, he's highly disapproval of physical fighting), he can get extremely protective of anyone that he likes.
dave's tolerant, and has a long fuse, but once you trigger his anger you're in his bad books. forever. he's not at all forgiving, and if you do enough to get him to really dislike you, there's simply no way to recover from that. he normally walks away from a conflict before things get too bad, though. surprisingly, a smile is a common sight. he's been to hell and back in his life, but he covers it with good cheer and refuses to dwell on anything that happened back in his hometown, new york city. david's most common hobby is finding things to keep himself busy, which ranges from staring at mind numbingly boring tv shows to running around paris. his passion is taking care of children, and even though he's always wanted one of his own, he can't trust anyone enough to let them into his life like that.

HISTORY,
dave's life story can't be called happy, in any sense of the word. even as a child, he and his kid sister fought a lot over things like toys and even friends. they were both extremely opinionated, and the little arguments often ended up with them rolling around the floor and yelling. it was a common sight to see the two stoner children with black eyes and bruises on their faces during school. some of the teachers worried about them, but it was new york city; worse things happened to other kids, so no one bothered to stop the two children from injuring each other.
if anything, things just got worse over the years. olivia and dave didn't do much physical fighting after dave entered high school and olivia started middle school, but most of their time together was spent in stoney silence. no pun intended. dave's grades weren't good, but they weren't bad either. maybe a few hundredths of a percent above average, and they only improved over the years. even though adolescent david spent a fair amount of his free time smoking with his friends, he didn't neglect his studies, and was able to get into a good college when the time came for that.
college in florida was nice, and though he wasn't too rich, he was able to get a few scholarships. enough to pay for a few years, then loans were taken, and though things got a little tighter when it came to money, dave made it through his college experience unscathed. he made a lot of friends, too, though like everyone he knew before and during his first job, he doesn't keep in contact with them anymore. by now, his personality had mellowed a lot, and away from the bad influence of his old friends, he was able to find a steadier lifestyle. finally graduated from college and looking for a job, david ended up moving back to new york city and getting a teaching position at the elementary school he used to attend.
by this time, his sister had already moved to paris to get a change in scenery and run her own daycare, and the two siblings kept in contact. now that they were both much more stable and had their own lives, it was easy to look back on their childhood of fighting and laugh without any awkwardness about it. siblings did that kind of thing, it was normal. nothing to be ashamed of, right? olivia even told him about some of his co-workers that she knew he might take an interest in, and though he didn't really see any of the ones she had pointed out in that way, he became good friends with a number of them, and through that little social chain, dave found someone that he did like.
she didn't work at the same school as dave and her best friend that had introduced dave to her, but evelyn worked at one of the nearby highschools, and the two hit off on the first meeting. it wasn't long before they were a solid couple, and though every pairing has their fights, nothing bad enough happened to make them break apart for a while. their mutual friend probably hadn't meant for them to get together, though, because she was oddly distant after evelyn and dave started dating. the couple was a little worried, but she was still a good friend, and there was simply nothing they could think of that would help her be happier. it was predictable that when dave was twenty seven and evelyn was twenty five, david proposed.
the wedding was set for a few months in the future, and obviously, their mutual friend was the first one they told about their engagement. she was the one that had gotten them together, after all, so she was the first one to know after dave and evelyn's families. the three went out celebrating, or maybe it could just be called drinking, because that's all they did until around two in the morning, when evelyn was passed out on the couch and dave was about to do the same.
but things didn't work out the way that they had planned. all three were drunk, and with evelyn out for the night, their mutual friend didn't see why she shouldn't try to get david to spend a night with her. but he was an engaged man, for pete's sake, and refused the advances. things just got worse after that. activities that dave gave no consent to went on, and evelyn woke up in the middle of them. with her friend and fiancee in another room, she could only assume the worst from the noises, and wasn't anywhere to be seen in the morning. dave was left in his house when their mutual friend left, horribly upset and refusing to go to work, or even speak to anyone.
it lasted for two months. david was too torn up to hunt evelyn down and set things straight that he hadn't wanted to do anything with her friend, and simply spent those months in a near-zombie state. he cooked and he cleaned the house, but any free time left him in tears. it was when he was sitting on a park bench that he saw two kids fighting over toys in the sand box, and was reminded of he and olivia when they were children. it was the first time he smiled in what seemed like forever, and he began to come back to life after that. he still never reported the rape, though. pride gets in the way of things like that, and dave still had some pride left, much to his surprise.
of course, he couldn't expect to be welcomed back to his job after two months of unexplained absence, and was as good a fired by then. so what could an unemployed and borderline depressed man do with his life? well, dave's will to live was too strong to allow him to try committing suicide, so he tried to cover everything up with smiles and good cheer, and after a few more months of doing that, it’s gotten surprisingly easy to just live in the present and ignore the past to the best of his ability.
after finding a way to get through a normal day without crying, dave decided that it might be a good idea to get back into the normal flow of life. he stopped refusing to talk, and asked his sister if he could move in with her, in paris. olivia might have been a bit surprised, but she said yes, and even offered him a job at the daycare she ran, since dave was so good with kids. he accepted, since he had no where else to work, and kids were cute, after all. it took a few months to arrange everything and get himself to paris, but he’s been living and working with his sister for about half a year now, and everything’s as close to normal as it will be for a long time.
