Lily was out wandering the streets of Paris, having finished her classes for the day. It was a little chilly and cloudy, but not too bad out. She wore skinny jeans, dark brown boots, a tight purple top, with a jacket over it. Her hair was pulled loosely back into a small pony tail. She had done a lot of exploring for the past week or two, just getting settled in and adjusted to her new life. She was seriously considering staying here once she finished college. Paris was a wonderful city, and would be a great place to live in. She loved it, the language, the food, the people, the sites. She felt at home here, and was beginning to find the relief she had been looking for.
She had gotten lost a couple times, and had to ask directions, but slowly she was starting to learn her way around. And her French was improving too. She used it all the time, and was studying it at school. She hoped to become fluent in it, especially if she intended stay here permanently. She had come mainly to start over, and finish up school, not really knowing what she would do afterwards. But at the moment, she was thinking that when she graduated, she'd return home for a couple montsh, send her stuff over, sell a couple things, and put some stuff she didn't want to sell into storage.
She was living in a small apartment at the moment, not having found a good one she liked uet. It was cozy, but wasn't really what she wanted. She hoped to find a nice, small one in downtown Paris. At the moment, she was wandering around the Jardin des Halles garden, having stumbled upon it on one of her walks. It was a nice area, quiet and peaceful. She was deep in thought, and not really paying attention to where was going. And of course, she stumbled on a loose paving stone, and wound up in a heap on the ground. "That was graceful." She muttered, rubbing her forehead as she sat up.

Emmi loved Paris, it was so beautiful and she loved just walking around and seeing the sights, even though she’d seen them time and time again. She fitted in in France, her French accent was still pretty good considering she’d learnt French when she was thirteen and had not heard herself speak it since she was fifteen. Apart from her appearance she seemed quite the local, she knew her way to the smallest places and she knew how to behave in order to not look like a tourist, now people were asking her for directions rather than the other way around. She felt like a true Parisian and she liked that feeling, it was one of belonging and she truly felt like the students at the academy had accepted her. At her old school everyone’s opinions had changed, she’d started off as little miss popular and then as soon as she’d lost her hearing they started to treat her differently, they spoke to her as if she had learning difficulties or kept away as if being deaf was catching. Here she’d just introduced herself as Emmi and they made up their own minds, they all seemed to be putting the fact she couldn’t hear to the side, she had got in, just the same as them.
As she was walking she noticed a girl trip on a loose paving slab and she ran towards her, hoping the girl was okay. She noticed the blonde mutter something but her lips didn’t move enough for Emmi to catch it. She looked at the girl, “are you okay?”
[/i] she asked whilst signing with her hands, she spoke in a relatively clear voice but signed just to demonstrate to the girl that she was deaf. She found that if she just spoke without moving her hands people assumed she was just like them and then they rushed through their words or turned their heads away. Emmi didn’t want special treatment but she needed people to be looking at her otherwise she wouldn’t know what they were saying, lip reading relied on her being able to read their lips. She hoped the girl was alright, she seemed about Emmi’s age and it had only been a small stumble so she was sure she would be fine, plus she was sat up and talking so it couldn’t have been too painful. Lily had never really been popular in school, but most people at least knew her name. She socialized quite a bit, always hanging out with her friends. She was never the girl that all the boys went after, but she didn't want to be. She had been happy with her life, living in downtown New York City. And then all of that happened. Everything that she didn't want to think about. Everyone left, not wanting to deal with her problems, and so when she got a chance to move to Paris, she took it. She loved the city. New York City was amazing as well, but it was nothing like Paris, and she couldn't really imagine herself living anywhere else. This was where she belonged now.
She looked up as girl ran over, obviously seeing her fall. The girl spoke clearly, asking if she was okay, but she signed as well, meaning she was deaf. She was rather suprised the girl could speak so clearly. She had once meet someone who was deaf, but the man had only been able to say a couple words. She thought a moment, remembering her sign language classes in high school. It had been an afterschool group that she had done just for fun. "Yeah, I'm okay. Thanks." She said, while signing, then realized she had accidently signed the word for bye. "Ah, wrong sign!" She said with a little laughing, and pausing a moment, then made the correct sign.

Through highschool Emmi was the ‘it’ girl, she was kind but she had enough of a hard shell to put herself at the top. The boys liked her because she was pretty and the girls liked her because she was nice, and she had very good fashion sense. She had been a cheerleader as well as head of the drama department so her social life was pretty good. She’d always have the big parties, her and her two sisters just wanted to be popular, and they succeeded. They were a power family and their parents did everything they could to help the girls live their lavish lifestyle. After she lost her hearing everything changed, her ‘friends’ didn’t want to spend time with her anymore because they wanted to just talk and laugh like they used to do, they didn’t want to have to learn a new language or always look at her when they spoke. Of course there were the few that stuck around but they were rare.
The girl looked up and Emmi was glad to see that she was okay, she watched as the girl signed and she was surprised that the girl seemed to have a grasp but she was a bit insulted that the girl didn’t seem to want her around. Then she read the girls lips and found out that it was a mistake. Emmi didn’t mind the mistake; in fact she thought that it was nice that the girl was trying to sign, even though it was obvious that she wasn’t fluent. She smiled at the girl, “It’s alright, when I was learning I got it wrong all the time” [/i] she said and signed at the same time. She couldn’t help but sign fast but it didn’t matter as the girl could hear her anyway. The girl seemed nice, about her age and Emmi warmed to her immediately due to her trying to sign.
