it had been a couple years since zeke had stepped foot into a subway. he normally stayed away from them because they were a place where him and his father would go to go to the doctor since zeke couldn't drive at that time. now that his father was dead, all that it reminded him of when his father was sick. cancer was the worst thing that could happen to some one and the ones around them. it was hard watching some one slowly fade away to nothing and knowing there was nothing that you could do for them. knowing that you're worthless.. zeke thought to himself as he stared at a train coming down the line. zeke hated being the guy that helped people now because all it did was cause him pain. he had gone through enough of that with his parents.
as soon as he stepped onto the train, he stiffened. he knew this was going to be a bad ride. as he went to get into his seat, he collided with some one not paying attention. "jesus christ you fuckin retard, move out of my way." he snapped, his muscles becoming stiff. all he wanted to do was get into his seat. obviously that wasn't going to happen with some one standing in his way. he glared at the boy in front of him, practically eye to eye, but zeke was a big boy so he was used to being slightly larger than others.

Simeon was not having a good day. I mean, if there was ever a bad day to bump into him and throw up a confrontational front, this was it. It wasn't anything that had happened on that day that had set him on edge. He'd just had the entire day to himself, and left to his own thoughts had given him plenty of time to reflect. This whole business with Heloise had thrown him for a loop. The apathetic, snarly Simeon had let his guard down and allowed himself to grow attached to someone. The potential repercussions of that action were enough to fill him with apprehension. But it was other things too. He was slacking off with everybody. He'd actually been civil to Scarlett, and for some reason beyond his comprehension Gareth had decided he was likeable. When was the last time he had made a solid enemy?
It was with these thoughts that he boarded the subway car, his mind far away. The seats were all taken at this point, so he leaned up against one of the center poles and spaced out. He didn't notice as the car emptied out, remaining standing. There were a few more stops before he reached his home station, so beyond tuning in briefly every time they came to a station, he was deep in thought.
Now, what he really needed was a decent catharsis. He needed to provoke someone to the point of vicious hatred, to prove that he still had what it took. Because Simeon believed that that was the way for him to get through life: making as many enemies as possible. The logic was so convoluted on that topic that even he didn't spend much time thinking about it. Simeon needed to do something impulsive and dangerous.
Apparently, someone had paid attention to thoughts because it was then that he felt someone bump his shoulder roughly. He tensed, leaning against the pole to regain his balance, then turned around slowly. His expression changed from blank apathy to cold pleasure as a smirk lifted a corner of his mouth. He barely processed what the other guy was saying. Neither of them moved an inch, which wasn't surprising. Simeon was 6'2” and built. He was not easily intimidated. In fact, he couldn't remember the last time someone had succeeded. Still, the man now facing him looked pretty solid, too. Simeon's mind didn't snap immediately to violence, so that didn't matter to him. He sized up his opponents on an intellectual level, and only vaguely calculated the potential risk to his person. But right now, what he wanted was to send this asshole over the edge.
”It must be my lucky day.” His eyes flashed; he would be acting on pure impulse from here on out. In the back of his mind, he realized where this was probably headed. The beauty of it was that he didn't care. ”Looks like you're having a bad day, Hostile Stranger. Still, why don't you try looking where you're going instead of needlessly crashing into innocent bystanders. And blaming the person standing motionless in a nearly empty car? That's pure class.” In the act of turning around to face Zeke squarely, Simeon had effectively blocked any possible route around. He did this subconsciously, acting on a basic instinct to claim his space.

zeke had always dreamed of growing up and making his father proud when he was younger. he dreamed of becoming a fireman or a police officer and showing his father that he was going to be great. that he would save people day in and day out. that he would do everything the right way, and never let his father down. funny how those things change. zeke was far from helping people, far from being nice, and far from being healthy. if there was ever a day that zeke thought his father would be proud of him, it would be the days before his mother's death. ever since then... zeke hasn't been himself. he's been a guy that his father never knew. a guy that zeke didn't want his father to know.
when this kid, who looked around his own age, talked right back to zeke, he immediately caught on fire internally. he boiled as this person told him what he thought was what. if there was ever one thing that zeke hated, it was being told what to do and being told he was wrong. in this case, he was being told both. zeke stepped up so that he wasn't even a foot away from this guy. "let me tell you something here, hollister." zeke always had some kind of nickname for some one that he didn't know. this guy looked like he was the typical male that tried to look like a hollister model. typical preppy boy. "i will show up at your house and beat you in front of your mother." zeke eyes were dead cold when he looked in hollister's eyes. what people didn't know was that zeke's tattoos were for each time he accomplished a step in mixed martial arts. "so you either step off or i swear to god himself that i will fuck your shit up."
zeke heard a gasp to his left and saw a little boy sitting in a seat next to his father. something in zeke hardened even more than usual. there was something about this little boy and his father that got to him. zeke looked up at the father again, and for the first time he saw fear a father's eyes. it took zeke a second to figure out that he was scared for his son. he was scared that zeke was going to do something. with force, zeke looked away and back towards hollister. there was no doubt in zeke's mind that he would snap if this kid didn't back down.
"here, i'll even move for your big head to get past me." zeke moved to the side, indicating that he was going to have the seat that hollister was protecting. "this is your chance to walk out of here without having to tell your girl that you're a pussy cause you couldn't defend yourself." zeke stood there for a second and then said, "well?" there was a challenge in his voice, and part of him knew that the guy would throw something back at zeke without hesitation. a smirk crossed zeke's face as he stared the other guy square in the eyes.

If Simeon wasn't an atheist, he would say this guy was a Godsend. He was perfect, really, if a little bit too aggressive. But maybe that's what he was looking for. Some irritable, arrogant bastard to disregard any potential risk to his person in pursuit of a meaningless victory. Basically, Simeon needed himself in a slightly different package. He was hoping to channel all of his frustration into provoking this guy. If he was occupied with that, nothing else mattered. Even now he could feel everything melting away except the two of them. His cold, calculating gaze didn't falter. Simeon wasn't violent. He honestly didn't like fighting; it was the primitive man's way of solving problems. However, sometimes he just really needed to do something like this. As long as he could get the other person to throw the first punch he could launch into a fight with no reservations. Simeon had been in plenty of fights before, but he had never actually started one. Well, that was partially a lie. He was nearly always responsible for them, even if he had just been verbally provoking his opponents. You just didn't get through life with social skills like his unscathed. So Simeon was confident. He wasn't interested in backing down, and wouldn't unless the stranger pulled a gun or something. But really, what were the chances of that?
Somebody like this was almost too easy to mess with. Smirking, Simeon interrupted him almost as soon as he started talking. ”A nickname? That's cute.” As he continued talking, it became clear that Simeon wasn't facing the most brilliant of minds here. Which meant that he probably flaunted his masculinity by being overly violent and knew his stuff. He raised an eyebrow when his mother was mentioned. If there was a way to not threaten Simeon, it was by mentioning his family. He didn't maintain contact with any of them. He hadn't seen or heard from his mother since he was... what? Five? If even that? He knew it was just a common way of expressing how willing you were to destroy somebody, but it had no effect on Simeon. If this over-muscled, over-tattooed moron thought he could get to Simeon in such a pathetic way, he was sadly mistaken.
What he found interesting, though, was that the guy's attention was caught by the people seated to the side of them. Simeon analyzed people, he caught things everybody else missed, and he checked to see if he could use it against them. He didn't spare any attention for the father and son watching their “conversation” but he did take time to note that Zeke was distracted. Either he was too confident for his own good, or the particular dynamic between those two other strangers struck a chord. So, surmised Simeon, he either had a kid or had Daddy issues. Or both. Either way, he wasn't dissuaded by the alarmed child, and neither was Simeon. It wasn't like he was going to grab the kid and start swinging him like a weapon. As long as people stayed out of their ay, this was only going to affect the two of them.
When the man's attention returned to him and he resumed talking, Simeon almost regretted starting anything with him. Not because he felt threatened. He was way beyond that, and the man's words wee skating by with no effect. Simeon was more affected by the utter stupidity this guy was spurting. He was such a cocky son of a bitch, and he talked as if he actually knew what he was saying. This was barely worth his time. He couldn't do anything about it now, though. He was prepared for this to escalate, although you wouldn't be able to tell by looking. There was a surprising lack of tension in his body, and his expression remained controlled and confident. ”You arrogant fuck. I can't even imagine the level of insecurity somebody has to feel to have an attitude like that. You can't actually expect anyone to respect you.” It occurred to him then that he didn't have the best history of inter-personal relationships in the Paris metro system. He smirked at the thought, not taking his eyes off Zeke's.

when zeke was ten years old, he was beat by his father. for his own benefit though, zeke doesn't recall this other than for in his nightmares. a lot of the times he doesn't remember it while he's awake, but it's stuck in the back of his head. nevertheless, with that itch in the back of his head, and the fact that he was beat near death, zeke learned mixed martial arts. commonly people don't expect it from him when he is prepared to fight them because... well look at him. he looks like he wouldn't know what the hell he was doing. to be completely honest, he looked like quite a bit of a pussy, especially in the eyes of guys like hollister here. to a guy like hollister, zeke would bet anything that he had let his guard down. hell, zeke would too if he was hollister. that was the only mistake.
but what hollister had to say didn't throw zeke for a loop, because the be completely honest, he didn't care what people thought about him. he didn't care if people respected him, because he didn't respect people. it was like a circle of life, but slightly psychologically disturbed. so when he said that, a smile actually crossed zeke's face. all of his tension left his body, and he actually rolled his head back and laughed. his shoulders shook slightly, and he felt all the stress lift off his shoulders. he looked down at hollister, tears actually forming in his eyes from laughing so hard. then suddenly something in zeke clicked. he turned from laughing to suddenly pure rage. suddenly everything that zeke had felt in the past month came flooding up into his system. his father's death. "you're going to regret this." his mother's suicide. "you can fucking count on it." his stillborn baby. "you better pray i don't kill you."
then, just like that, zeke did what he had been trained to do. he took one step forward, lurched at the guy as if he was going to kick him, but he switched his action and threw a punch right at his face. within those few seconds zeke thought of all the trouble that he had gone through for his father. how he had helped him with his chemo, helped his father eat, helped hold his father's head above the toilet so that he didn't pass out and drown himself. he had done everything in his might to help his father get better, but in the end it didn't matter. his father had died anyway.
"help!" he heard a woman yell in the background, but he had focused all of his anger at this man in front of him. the train jolted slightly after he threw his punch, and he almost landed on a couple of teenagers. he caught himself on the wall of the train and twisted so that he could throw a kick at the guy, using the wall to push off.

Simeon didn't know a thing about Zeke or his issues. Even if he had, it was doubtful whether that knowledge would affect his behavior toward him. You just didn't act like a total jerk to Simeon and expect him to be understanding of extenuating circumstances. It just wasn't in his playbooks. So, Simeon wasn't psycho-analyzing the guy as their conversation progressed. He had taken stock of the situation, made some snap judgments about the guy, and proceeded in his characteristic reckless fashion. The situation wasn't helped when Zeke broke down laughing. This guy wasn't helping the situation at all by acting like a lunatic. Simeon smirked, his eyebrows rising slightly.
Just as suddenly, things changed again. When Zeke's laughter ceased abruptly to be replaced with something more ominous, something occurred to Simeon. It was just a little inkling of a feeling, but it grew into a realization when the guy moved forward. It seemed simple enough: go in for one move and change suddenly to another. Simeon wasn't expecting it though; he had braced for a kick, and instead received a punch to the face. His little realization hit him at roughly the same time as the fist connected with his cheekbone. He was going to have his ass handed to him.
It was a solid little fact, not a worry. Simeon was not concerned about his well-being. The adrenaline would stop any pain for the moment, and he could deal with the rest later. In a way, this wasn't even a bad thing. Simeon was used to unhappiness; it contented him. Right now, he was discontent. He had lost his equilibrium. His philosophies on life had gotten jumbled and weren't leading him down his familiar life path anymore. He was feeling conflicted and angry and confused. For a guy that was used to always knowing his own mind and getting exactly what he wanted, this was Hell for Simeon. So, as Zeke launched into the fight, the little trigger in Simeon's head that prevented him from throwing the first punch was flipped. And he was glad.
All of his frustrations channeled into dealing with his present situation. He heard some lady cry out for help, and spared a glance to look over at her. Right. As if one of them was going to miss, spin 180 degrees and fly five feet through the air to somehow end up messing with her personal space. Jesus, people were so stupid. He could only look away for a split second, though, and he knew that. He focused on the stranger again as he was thrown off balance. There was a vague sensation in his face that he thought was probably pain, but as long as he ignored it it faded into the background. For now. As expected, the guy launched at him again, seeming so animalistic that Simeon wondered if he was all there. You know, mentally. Or maybe he was just in need of a release, just like Simeon. Jolted out of non-aggression by that first hit, Simeon took a rapid step back to avoid the kick. It was obvious this wasn't going to be your typical fist fight. Too fucking bad Simeon didn't know any other way to fight. The smirk dropped from his face, replaced by a stony scowl as he maneuvered in their tight environment. He didn't notice, but people were relocating to either end of the car, leaving the center open to the two young men. There they stood, frozen into inaction like the simple-minded sheep Simeon despised.
He surged forward and swung a right hook, hoping to capitalize on the moment that Zeke was regaining his balance from the kick. This brought him closer to his opponent, but Simeon was used to having more space to move around. In a more open area he was light on his feet, ducking in and out of harm's way. Here, with such limited mobility, he should have adapted his tactics, but he hadn't exactly woken up that morning knowing he would be fighting someone clearly more skilled than he was. He was stupidly vulnerable and barely had time to realize it. Zeke had said he would regret it... but you know what? He wouldn't. No matter how this went down, he wasn't going to regret it.
