P O C K E T S. When it came to teaching, Jude could be a rather relaxed guy when it came to teaching. He let students call him professor Jude, he wore jeans more often then not and even had class outside when nice out. He also invited students out for non-class related discussion groups at a local cafe nearby. It was much more relaxed and allowed for free thinking. Add that on top of a once a week session where people could get feedback on their books....Yeah some teachers respected him for what he did and other’s thought it was a bit too personal. A writer’s work was their own but Jude tried to provide an outlet where no one tried to steal another’s ideas. He just thought getting a fellow writer’s opinions was always a good thing. An editor only really will take out errors or tell you how best to market it. If you really wanted to stay true to yourself, then that was something Jude encouraged. Plus he helped his students find editors.
Today there wasn’t much going on during his lunch hours. He met with a student real quick and then it was off for some good food. When he grabbed food from here it was usually something light as he had his own snacks in his office. The food here was good but Jude loved his salty treats. It was a problem as he had a drawer full of peanuts, chips, pretzels and jerky. Saffron was the only one who knew as he also kept a stash of candies and sometimes little cakes in there for her. Usually when she came in for a quick visit, she’d grab something as his office was locked when he was out of it. Student papers were in there as well as answer keys; all he needed were those things to get out.
After grabbing some soup, a sandwich and a small salad, Jude walked into the lunch room. It was fairly lavish compared to dining areas of most secondary institutions. Part of why the school was so exclusive. That and most people who graduated here had pretty successful careers. That’s because you got in based more on talent then money. Though money did help as it was an expensive school. Professors and students milled in the room together, chit chatting. It had always been that way. after saying hi to a couple of his students, Jude collapsed in a chair at a little table where his friend Lynelle sat. She also worked in the “writers” department as she did the writing skills class. The brunette was a new professor for this year and Jude had tried to help her gain her footing. Plus being in the same department they really got along and had plenty of discuss. Plus, being close to the same age helped some. She didn’t some like a woman filled with drama with Jude respected a lot. ”So I have decided that we need to have a joint class at some point. Might be kind of fun. Then I can pick on your God awful choice of a color palette.” Lynelle loved pink and while it was ok he liked to pick on her for such a cliche girl color to like.

Lynelle ran a hand through her hair exasperated at the papers she was reading. She understood writing skills was boring and sometimes tedious as they had to go through a lot of writers different styles and everything but for them not even pay enough attention as to do a decent essay was just frustrating and disappointing. She some promising students though, even if all of them were talented some of them just shined through the crow and Lynelle, just as many other teachers in this academy, took pride on being quite exigent in her essays. She was lowering the level lately seeing her pupils weren’t going to make any effort to learn classic writers and their different styles. She had taught literature back in her previous jobs at high schools, and earned this place in the academy because of the books she wrote, sometimes when sadness stroke her she wondered if the choice had been a good one, or if she would better in some Oxford College or at Yale or Brown. But Lynelle wouldn’t back down now that she was there and she tried to make her classes as fun as possible and bearable. Giving up grading the rest of the essays she sighed and took her purse exiting her office and going to the lunch room.
She was a healthy kind of girl and also a very light eater except when it came to candies, she loved those and it was her weak point. She picked a salad and walked toward one of the tables near the windows so she could observe Paris weather and students going back and for across the yard. She heard some footsteps and when she lifted her head from her salad Jude was sitting in front of her. Lynelle had kind of a crush on him because he had always helped her in everything since she arrived, he had been nothing but kind to her and she wasn’t used to that at all. She raised her eyebrow at him, with a little smile, not ashamed at all of liking pink. Today though she was all dressed in white and she picked other choices of colors, usually always pastels or soft tones. “At least I have some kind of fashion sense even if it’s almost always pink.” Lynelle didn’t know why she liked the color so much, maybe because it looked cute and sweet on her and made her feel a bit loved. “A joint class sounds good, maybe that will raise the interest of my students, they are doing quite poorly on the essays...” She sighed again shaking her head and picking her salad, not really hungry.
Lynelle didn’t have problems with food but she didn’t like eating much, even if it was something light like a salad she would just most pick at her food than actually eat it. “I was planning on attending one of Hayden classes, I’ve heard they are quite popular.” A smile spread on her face at the thought of her last conversations with said teacher, they seemed to be quite alike and he had complimented her a lot. She stared at her food thinking what Jude and her could do for their class but some far nothing came to mind, maybe some little theater about one of the novels? That would raise some interest and maybe students would like to participate more on the class. “What do you think we should do?”

P O C K E T S. Jude threw his head back in a mock laugh. ”I have real style. Girly is not a sense of fashion. It’s the norm.” He loved to pick on her. Sometimes she made it so easy. Plus, he knew at some point she’d get back at him. It made it all the more fun. Being close in age they got along fairly well. Plus Jude knew the whole new school worries and wanted to ease them for her. When she first came, she had seemed like a teacher the students would try walking all over. That worried him. While most of them were good students with the whole Gossip Sol board and normal young adult problems, classes could get disrupted easily. Even if they tried to keep it to themselves, they didn’t focus well. How Jude tried to get around it is making his class as interactive as possible. Between the reading sessions and props he used to pull images from the books to vision, usually he did alright. Most modern writings were all about violence, suspense, fantasy or love. So the older classics weren’t well received by the writing students. Jude had to do the best he could.
”It’s also only the middle of the semester. Many will cram for the final piece and usually do well on their finals. If not, I’d give them a hard slap in the face. Something drastic.” Anything to get them to realize this was the real world. Yes, you could make it big as a writer. But that sometimes took years and hardly anyone made their living solely off that. Usually teaching jobs or some other means was needed as support unless your book was made into a movie. Just having mediocre grades in classes vital to your major wasn’t ever a good idea. It usually took a pretty big test or something to get their eyes to open up; especially when it was added to an already existing class grade. Even if it was a test that wouldn’t actually get counter in the long run, just the shock may be enough. Then again, Jude did notice that some just really didn’t care at all. Maybe he was a bit old fashioned in the sense-despite only being out of school fiveish years-that you generally had to work hard to get what you want. Something his mother had taught him well in his homeschooling.
As he leaned forward a bit, Jude went for his salad first. When he ate, Jude liked to eat one dish at a time. Even if everything was on the same plate and touching, he’d start on one item, then another and finally whatever was left. Drove his family bonkers but he didn’t like to just engulf everything on the plate and mix the tastes. Jude liked to savor each unique flavor before moving to the next one. Usually whichever he looked forward to next would be what he saved for last because he knew his taste buds would enjoy it most. Today that dish was the soup. It was off to the side a little so he didn’t divulge into it too early, ruining the experience.
Jude left a few stray pieces he didn’t like before sitting back. The salad was small so he was easily able to go through it. Using the fabric napkin to wipe at his face, he clasped his hands hands together. ”Well I know right now my students are studying nineteenth century literature. Was thinking that we should pick a story or two together and have some exercises where they have to take what the author was saying and put it in so called modern terms. That way we can see if they truly do understand what the author was trying to have come across to the reader or not. Plus you get to have different writing styles thrown in there.” It was a fairly simple and lame idea but he liked trying to incorporate the different classes together. All these writing skills had to flow for them to make great pieces of work that sold well. Or, that they could at least be proud of.

When Lynelle first arrived to Paris she had expected to get along well with the teachers and that was it. She hadn’t thought of making friends and so, just co-workers she will see during free periods, maybe lunch and so on. And of course she hadn’t expected to get crushed. Jude helped her with everything when she arrived, her sweet looks always gave the impression of her being a damsel in distress, and though it was true she didn’t have much of a temper she could get pretty strict and serious when needed. Students tried to run over her because she was too good but once she got serious and took control of things they realized she wasn’t stupid. “I wouldn’t call jeans a shirt fashionable but whatever, pink is not bad and it looks good on me.” She suppressed the urge of sticking her tongue out like a five years old and instead smiled at him. Lyn wasn’t really a fashion girl, she liked to be comfortable but Paris was rubbing some of that glamour on her. Paris was changing her a lot and she was enjoying her teaching. She wasn’t really worried about her students failing, she knew somehow they will manage to do great at the end, but she wished they will show a bit more of interest. Taking into account holidays were approaching she couldn’t as much of them, they were tired and their minds were somewhere else. “I know they will manage.” she said chewing on a cherry tomato and playing with her salad again.
“What are you doing for Christmas? Visiting family?” Lynelle missed home, not like being totally homesick but she missed spending time with her parents and just chilling around the town. It was good to have some time for herself but she had way too much and it made her a bit depressed when she thought about everything she was missing out there. She tried to focus on work and fill her time and thoughts with that, but she couldn’t keep grading papers forever or planning her next class. Nodding at Jude she thought about the idea, her students won’t like the idea of having more work especially so close to holidays because they were just looking for their way out of classes to enjoy some free time, but it was a good idea and actually it was related to both their classes. “You know, they won’t like having double work but I think it’s a good idea, maybe that will wake them up a bit.” At least Lynelle could be proud of these students, she knew they weren’t going to copy or look for the answers on internet, they will make the effort. Most of them were there because they were filthy rich and some of them with scholarships but what they all had in common was their talent and the desire of making it big, also the competence.
Christmas was near and she was also thinking of holidays and warm chocolate with her family around the chimney and listening to carols on the radio. It was an idyllic image but she always had white beautiful Christmas in London. This year though she was planning on spending half on here and half back home. “It’s nice to know holidays are near.” Putting some distance between Jude and her was going to be good for her crush, or so she hoped. She had the impression Jude was dating someone already but he never spoke about it and Lyn never asked either. She didn’t like stepping into private affairs just as she didn’t like others doing the same with hers. She wanted to ask sometimes but she felt as if she was intruding some kind of secret.

Jude loved Paris and the life within it. It was vastly different from the little wine town his family lived in. While the small town life had it’s advantages he got restless there. There was only so much you could do and he liked being a social person. Most of those people couldn’t keep up with his level of energy so being here was perfect for him. Besides some older teachers, the ones he got along with best had the same spirit as him. One filled with good humor and wanting to seek a good time. Even if it was a quiet night in or a night on the town, Jude was fairly flexible as long as his friends were. ”It is when I wear it because I make it stylish.” To “prove” his point Jude popped out her collar and puckered his lips, exaggerating the way they stuck out. He liked hanging out with Lynelle. She seemed to be able to take his craziness and still keep him slightly in reality. Even when he was trying to make his classes interesting, he never let them get out of hand. He was very careful about that and made sure it was known he was very serious that people actually get their work done.
Jude felt for Lynelle when it came to her students. He knew what it was like to be the new teacher around here. Sometimes he wondered if she had all these hopes of expecting her students to be great from the start. Then other times he saw she was more down to Earth then to think that. Perhaps he was just looking too much into it from a point of view with no clear view. Being a writer sometimes he looked much too much into things that he shouldn’t. Jude knew if she had any serious problems she’d seek help from another professor she trusted. Once the greens on his plate were gone, Jude tucked it under his sandwich plate and leaned back again as he lesurily ate it. ”I’m not sure yet. They want me to go home but I may stay home and just spend time with people here.” Mainly his girlfriend and maybe her family? Depending on if she felt comfortable with that or not. As some crumbs fell on his shirt he looked down and brushed at them while he ocntinued speaking. ”What about you? Heading back to London to visit everyone there or staying to experience the magic of Paris during the holidays?” Jude knew she was fairly close to her family so it seemed logical she would want to go visit them. He was close with his but right now he wasn’t rushing off to see them. There was always the summertime.
Jude tapped the table with the hand not holding his sandwich. He tilted his head from side to side before shrugging his shoulders. ”Well if it’s not graded it can’t really be “work” you know? Could say it’s something more free form to loosen them up before midterms and such come along. Might be fun to see what people come up with considering all the different forms of slang out there.” As he glanced back up at his face a small smile formed. He was completely unaware of what Lynelle felt concerning him like she was unaware of his feelings for a certain student. It’s funny how those things worked. Currently it caused no problems but as time went on no one knew how those things could go. As long as no one got hurt that was all that mattered when drama like that happened. Even seeing the pettiness from the Gossip Sol board made him shake his head, wishing that no one took it all wrong. He liked having her as a friend and saw them becoming fairly close ones at that. Perhaps he was being a bit naive, but Jude just wanted to be able to have friends with no romantic attachment.

Life in London wasn’t so different from life in Paris, except because here she had more friends that back home and she was slowly opening up a bit more. Lynelle had always been a bit overprotected by her family and she had always been a loner. Making friends and being out of her family wing helped her a lot in growing up some parts of her life that had been completely shut down. She attended her first party ever, she made friends… she even liked someone. But life was not perfect of course and being shy by nature she wouldn’t dare telling Jude about her feelings. “Sure sure.” She said laughing at him and shaking her head. Jude was a bit crazy and that made her laugh, she liked hanging around him because well, he made her happy. There were few people who made her happy mostly because she didn’t have much people to rely on; her family, Haydn and Jude. He worried about her and how she was going to make it in the academy with the students, so far Lynelle was managing fairly well, of course she had some troubles but nothing major and once students saw they weren’t going to pass doing nothing they started to take her more seriously. She could be sweet and caring and she could try and make her classes as fun as possible but she wasn’t stupid, they wouldn’t walk over her. Jude protected her and she was sure if she ever needed his help he would be there to take control of things, but Lyn didn’t like being the damsel in distress at all.
And more important she didn’t want him to see her in such a situation, she was stronger than she seemed. Eating a bit more of her food she looked at him as he talked about his holidays, Lynelle was really close to her family so of course she was going to go back to London to stay the Christmas there, there wasn’t a place she would like to be more than there. She wondered where Haydn was going to spend his holidays and with whom, or if he was going to be alone for such festive holidays. She mentally made a note of asking him about that later. “Sounds like a good plan.” Obviously that made her suspicious rise, she was almost sure that he had someone but she couldn’t tell for sure and it wasn’t her business as much as it might hurt her, she lowered her head to look to her dish and played a bit more with the food, not really hungry anymore. Not that she was hungry in the first place. “I am heading home of course. No better place to spend my holidays than with my family.” Lynelle didn’t have friends to spend time in Paris really and she would much rather go home and have some company than spend them alone at her apartment and with nothing to do.
She was of the opinion the students like to slack off, and the less they had to work for things the better. She knew because most of them worked the minimum required passing and that was all, and then they gave their all in what they were interested in and the finals. Lynelle had seen that dozens of times but she liked the idea of giving them something to write and work. Things on the academy were strict and hard and Lynelle tried to keep up with the high level of the academy. “They have to write and think, that’s too much work for them.” She sigh a small smile on her lips as she imagined the kids fighting to translate the pieces to modern language, some of them would come up with very funny ones. “I agree on that one, which ones should be giving them? Little Woman maybe?.” Louisa May Alcott had been one of her favorites, apart from Emily Brönte and her Wuthering Heights, which was her favorite book ever.

P O C K E T S. Jude mocked scoffed as he rubbed at the back of his head. ”You act like it isn’t possible. But oh it is. When you’re me.” He winked playfully as he sat across from her. He had always been one with a slightly flirty nature. It wasn’t something he could help and hopefully Saffron understood that as they continued to date. For years he tried not to be the way he was because past girlfriends had complained about it. But when he couldn’t pinpoint every time he did it then it was a bit more difficult to change a bit of yourself. Plus, when you find the person you’re meant to be with they’re supposed to love you for you, no matter what. And then you as a person change based on how they make you better. That’s what Jude figured real love was supposed to be like for someone. If Saffron was the one-and it was too early to tell-then perhaps that would happen at some point. Right now, Jude was simply being himself, how he had always been.
One thing Jude tried not to do was play with hearts. When he was with a girl, he was only ever focused on her. He would still keep all his female friends because they usually helped make him a bit better in some way but he usually kept some personal rules. He wouldn’t text them after a certain time of night unless it was work related or a real emergency. If he couldn’t simply say a goodbye then he’d stop texting until the next morning. Also, he rarely had a girl in his apartment alone that wasn’t his girlfriend. If they came up it was very briefly before they headed back out. They were never really explained but rules that Jude himself would live by. ”Are your family gathering’s usually really loud and fun? Or more subdued?” His own family was very lively and loved to dip into eggnog and whatever else. Jude’s family loved to laugh even if there were very serious things they all had to start discussing at some point. They all felt like even with important things in front of them, one still had to have a sense of humor. It’s something Jude carried with him to Paris.
As he chewed, his movements because slower while in thought. ”Yeah we could do that. Maybe have a back up for fun for the ones who actually finish fast enough? Something more difficult like The History of Henry Esmond by William Thackery?”

Jude had this big jokingly ego on himself that reminded her of boys back at her high school, those rugby players that loved to show off and were popular and thought the world belonged to them just because of how sexy they were and how they could play a sport. With Jude it wasn’t to that extent though and she knew he wasn’t serious about it. He also was a flirter, something Lynelle wasn’t used to because she never had someone placing his charms on her at all, he was the first and she didn’t know what to make of it. She laughed out loud, shrugging her shoulders. “You have to check that ego of yours.” She said playfully and went back to her food. Lynelle wasn’t a girl of thinking things over for hours; in fact she thought about them for a while then parked those things in her mind until she was ready to look at them from a different point of view. She never had to deal with much trouble in her life aside from those people back at high school that like to make fun of her for being always with a book in her hands and her funny way of speaking, truth was Lynelle had always been a very polite girl and when younger she tended to speak like she had learnt in the books, a bit old-fashioned and always correct.
“Oh depends if this year my family is having a get-together or is only my parents and me.” If all her family decided to spend Christmas with her then it would be a lot of people together, having fun, laughing, being a bit noisy and with her cousins all around. If it was only the three of them then it was quite and calm, very homey and sweet. She liked it both ways but had a better time when she was alone. “If it’s with all my family then it’s going to get really loud and I guess this year we will have one of those.” Last year she had spend it with her parents only so she guessed this year it was family get-together. “What about yours? When you spend it with them I mean.” She had no one in Paris worth spending her holidays with though she was thinking of asking Haydn what he was doing. She wished she had a boyfriend or friends to spend them with but it had never been that case.
To forget that she focused on her food and also the work they were planning on doing for their class. “They will have great fun with that.” She snickered thinking about the multiple sighs that would raise between her students. “I agree, we will have so much fun watching the struggle with it.” She was feeling a bit mischievous, maybe because it had been his idea and they were doing it together, she would have agreed with whoever he wanted to do honestly but there was no need for him to know that.
