Shock and surprise was all that he was feeling at that moment. Shock in what he had just done, and surprised in how well Anouk had taken what he had said to her. He was still at the computer, his hand hovering over his mouse to stop himself from signing back onto the IM chat that he was just in. True, when Ross arrived on the scene it had sort of ruined the moment, but he wasn’t taking much bother of her. The adrenaline that had been rushing through his body when he had finally told Anouk how he had felt about her was still pumping strong, as if to remind him that he had just done what he had just done. After weeks of being annoyed at her, after weeks of not talking to her and making her go through hell, he finally said those three little words and it was actually meaningful. He meant every bit of those three words.
Happiness was forcing his cheeks to widen into a smile, his dimple showed up and his cheeks started tingling as they began to hurt. Closing the gallery was easy as Adrienne didn’t even really care about working, he was glad she wasn’t such a fussy person when it came to work, even if she didn’t know much she did what Alex said and that was enough for him. For once he was feeling very optimistic and that was because Anouk had forgiven him, even though after she had come back from the hospital it had been awkward between them because he was aware of her feelings and she was more aware of what she wanted to do. He felt awkward, mainly because he knew that he loved her, he knew that it was going to get out sooner or later and he would have it rather much sooner than the latter. The few days after she had come back, he had to stop himself most of the time from just entering her bedroom and telling her everything.
Alexei was not very good when it came to emotions. When it came to emotions, he would rather say things through a screen then say it face to face and that was why when he saw her online, he had jumped at the chance of telling her. After quickly putting on a jacket and a scarf around his neck, locking up the gallery behind him he began to head towards home. It was amusing to him that Anouk would cook for this occasion well it was worth something doing over since it was an important day, but cooking! He had never really seen Anouk cook before and if she had, then he couldn’t tell the difference between her moms’ cooking and hers. Slowly he came to a stop outside a flower market, looking at the different types of flowers, he smirked to himself.
A few minutes later he was finally at the door of their apartment. He was truly terrified; he had no idea how to speak to her. Speaking online was one thing, but speaking in front of that person, especially when you had said something shocking, was another! Taking a deep breath he unlocked the door, a small smile on his face as the smell and warmth of the house and food greeted him like an old friend. Unwrapping his scarf with one hand and then his jacket afterwards, he left both on a hook and slowly made his way towards the kitchen. Standing in front of the doorway, he smiled at her; a single red rose behind his back. “Hey…”

Three little written words, that’s all it took to make Anouk happy. He had finally said it, those words she had been yearning to hear for years, he had finally said them. Well, written them but who cared? The effect was the same and so was the meaning. She couldn’t believe, even now, that her fairy tale was going to have its happy ending, after all the things she had gone through, and all the broken dreams and hopes she was finally free. It was as if those six months of suffering hadn’t been there at all, the pain in her chest was totally gone, vanished forever. She felt the smile in her face; it felt so strange after days of not smiling at all. The first days she had been home were difficult, of course there was no way of hiding to her mom and dad that she had tried to kill herself, and her mother had given her one hell of a time about it and tried to discover what was exactly wrong with her. She had spent those days feeling awkward around everyone, and most of the time locked in her room staring outside the window with her mother checking on her every few minutes. Anouk couldn’t really blame her but it was annoying. She had offered her mother a calm collected smile whenever they were together and little by little she seemed to calm down too and allow Anouk her own space again. Today she was so excited that she practically jumped down the stairs to throw her mom and dad out of the house with no chance to even say ‘no’ or talk back. Her mother had looked at her questioningly but once she saw the bright grin in Anouk’s face all her worry vanished.
As fast as she could she changed clothes, trying to look casual but perfect at the same time. She regretted offering cooking because now she had no idea what to make, she was there standing in the fridge just looking and seeing nothing at all, a smile on her face and a soft blush on her cheeks every time she replayed those three words in her head. Finally going for some steak and her special sauce she rolled up the sleeves of her sweat and started to cook. But of course, all happiness had its price and doubts started to pop in her mind. What if Alex didn’t really love her? What if this was his way of making sure she wasn’t going to kill herself again? She shook her head, trying to push away those thoughts from her mind, it had been a stupid decision, and a spur of the moment that she didn’t even know she was having until it was over. Then it had been too late of course and she had just gone along with it. Anouk’s heart skip a few beats when she heard the door unlock and being closed with a soft thud. She tried to suppress her nervous and her big grin as she heard his footsteps stopping in the kitchen door. She turned her head to smile at him, looking so gorgeous just by standing there. “I didn’t expect you here so early, I didn’t even have time to set the table.” She said greeting him. She knew Alex had a hard time with feelings and so she didn’t want to pressure him, she wanted things to go smooth and natural between them. “Come try this.” Anouk said turning again and facing the food so she could hide the grin in her face.

He had no idea how Anouk was going t get their parents out of the house by the time he returned, because they were sure going to ask her questions if they saw her cooking and he didn’t want her to be having a panic attack with not knowing what to say. Even though she had been lying for so long, it probably ate her up all the time, if Alex was in her position he would have been scared shitless by trying to figure out an excuse to get his parents out, but he knew Anouk would do it with no difficulties whatsoever. He was slightly excited; the adrenaline rushing through his body hadn’t even left him as his feet pounded the pavement on his way to the Fournier apartment. It took everything he had not to just start running and get there earlier than he was expected to, he didn’t’ want to suddenly just scare her and then make her think he was being far too eager. But it had been a very long time since he had a girlfriend. He didn’t even really know what to call Anouk anymore, everything was confusing, very confusing but he loved her and those were the only few words that didn’t confuse him. He was glad that he wasn’t at least confused about his feelings because if he was then everything would have still been complicated, he would have been still wondering about how to act with Anouk, but right now all he had to do was just go to her and she’d be there for him.
His heart pounded faster when he opened the door, but steadied as he heard her rattle stuff around in the kitchen, at least she was still acting normal, he should have taken a leaf out of her page. He felt as if he was sweating, but he couldn’t feel the wetness on his neck or his forehead, so he wasn’t, but he wouldn’t have minded, at least one sign of feeling something instead of feeling out of everything for once. His smile grew brighter just by an inch or so when he saw her turn her head to look at him, she was gorgeous. He didn’t understand how he couldn’t see her like that the first time he met her, because he really should have. Gripping the rose behind his back, he nodded. “So sorry, I’ll help you set the table anyway since you’ve been doing a lot of work it seems.” He gave an awkward smile and nodded once more as she told him to try what she had made so far. Walking towards her, he stood behind her and leaned forward. His face angling over her left shoulder, a hand went around and he picked up a small spoon. He was being very careful of his movements, purposely not touching her but just insanely hovering over her. He took a deep breath in, inhaling her scent for a second and closing his eyes for a half a second before picking the spoon up to his lips and taking a small taste of what she had made. “Delicious.” He spoke simply and stepped back away from her, a smile still on his face. With a shy, awkward gaze, his head went down before going back up again. His right hand came out from behind him and he held the deep reed rose out for her to take. “This is for you.”

Anouk obviously hadn’t asked them politely to leave the house; she had just picked their coats tossing them at her mother and pushed them down the hall and off the door. Her mother had raised her eyebrows at her in surprise and amazement but Anouk had winked at her before closing the door after them. She had been handling them all lovey-dovey for as long as she could and now it was her moment of being the same with Alexei. Her mother won’t be too happy about knowing it and that was the reason they were going to hide. The idea of eloping if things got unbearable was actually crossing her mind all the time, but she very much knew herself and if she had been hiding and lying for three years this was going to be piece of cake. Though being honest with herself she was going to have a hard time keeping her hands off Alexei while they were at home, knowing he was just some steps down the hall was going to drive her insane. But now she had to concentrate on the cooking, something she was good at but she never really liked doing, though if it was for Alexei then she will do so everyday if he wanted her to. She had time to at least have some background music that helped her to concentrate in what she was doing instead of having her mind wandering around all the time. Now and then she will smile shyly thinking about how now she had the green light to hug him and kiss him and touch him as many times as she wished and she had to quickly shot down those train of thoughts in order to not set the kitchen on fire.
Just as she was pushing down one of those thoughts her white knight in shining armor made his entrance on the kitchen, though she wouldn’t have wished for him to see her cooking, she didn’t mind at all. He acted all cute and shy around her; he hadn’t been lying when he said he didn’t have a proper girlfriend in some time now. And for the first time in three years she regretted giving her kissed away to meaningless boys and doing what she did. She should have saved them for him, all of them. But back then there was no reason for doing so as her love seemed as impossible as the moon and now there she was, touching it with her own hands. She laughed as he apologized, it was an annoying habit of him, apologizing over simple things while being stubborn over the important ones, but she loved it anyway. “Don’t apologize, and you can pick those plates and take them to the table then.” She said nodding towards the plates on the counter that she had ready. Her heart literally stopped beating as he came closer; she could feel his body but was careful about touching her. Anouk looked at him with a raised eyebrow, questioning. She smiled at him when he said her food was delicious and she turned her body so he would have to face her, placing her arms on the counter and leaning against it. “Thank you very much.” She said, and then looked down to see what Alex was offering her.
One simple rose, deep red. She knew that rose was going to be the inspiration of her paintings during the following weeks to come, tears almost streak down her face but she pushed them back. “It’s beautiful… thank you Alexei.” It wasn’t the first time she had said his name, but this time it sounded completely different, at least for her it did. This time everything was completely different. Taking the rose in her hands she raised it to take in the sweet fragrance and smiled with her eyes closed. She wished the clock would stop ticking right at that moment so she could save it forever, but she knew moments like this were waiting for her ahead and that made her happy. Taking a deep breather she got ready to say those three words back at him, there in the middle of the kitchen the moment seemed to call for it. “I love you.” It was ironic, how three little words can change the life of a person, how they could make everything go from black to bright color in a second. It was ironic how being so short held so much feelings and emotions.

Not being in a relationship for some time had stunted Alex’s knowledge about what to do when he was in the presence of someone who was going to be his girlfriend pretty much sooner or later. He didn’t really know how to act around them; he couldn’t just run up and hug her now could he? That was probably going to be really embarrassing for himself and just as award for Anouk. Shaking hands was a definite no of course, but it would have been the easiest he thought. It was one thing that he was worried about, his lack of social interactions with girls had also stunted this knowledge so he didn’t know if Anouk was looking for something more when he first arrived or if she was fine with the way that he was acting. Was it as awkward for Anouk as it was for him? So many questions ran through his head, he hoped that he could keep them in because he didn’t want Anouk to realize that she was in a relationship with a guy who had literally zero experience when it came to girls. He didn’t want her to be annoyed over it either, was this relationship already doomed? He rolled his eyes mentally at himself. What in the world was wrong with him? He was always thinking pessimistic thoughts, but just a few minutes ago he was very optimistic so why did everything have to just change all of a sudden? Sighing to himself he let it all go, it wasn’t time for this; it was time to spend a little while with Anouk. The thought just made him smile happily. He nodded his head at her but made no movement towards the plates. Keeping a sweet distance between them, one that wouldn’t make her think that he was trying to avoid her and one that, if anyone suddenly entered, they wouldn’t actually think anything of it, he tilted his head and gazed at her for a few, mere seconds, maybe a second too long but it was something that made him feel better. Being close to her made her feel happy; extremely happy and this had never happened with any other girl before so it was an entirely new experience for him. “You’re very much welcome.”
Smiling as she took the single rose with the grace of a dozen ballet dancers, he retreated his arm and put it behind his back once more, he didn’t know what to do or say, he could only just nod. She made him lose his speech and it wasn’t really a good thing because he looked like a doofus right at that very moment and he didn’t want to give off that impression to her. He kept his smile up as she closed her eyes and took a deep sniff of the rose that he had handed to her, he was so glad that she liked it; he was slightly scared that she would think he was cheap but he knew Anouk and there was no way she wouldn’t appreciate a simple gesture such as a rose. His head was still slightly tilted, and in the moment where her eyes were still closed, he crossed his arms over his chest and when she said those three words his smile grew wide and his mouth slacked a little. He moved his hands out of his crossing and gently moved his right hand; he left his hand just a few inches away from her face, as if he were ready to stroke it. Gently he cupped her cheek and sighed, a relieved; happy sigh that made him feel free. “I love you too.” He smiled awkwardly, and leaned forward, bending a little to catch her lips with his. For a second he just pressed it against her softly, and after a few more seconds he deepened the gentle kiss. His nose rubbed gently against hers for a second before he quickly pulled back. “Dinner time I think?”

It almost made Anouk laugh the way he acted around her, a sweet laugh of course, because she didn’t mind in the least giving him the time he needed to get used to this. She had more practice because she had a long list of names at her back. She didn’t want him to be jealous and awkward over it, or worried because he wasn’t as experienced as she was. Anouk bit her lip and smiled at him, keeping a distance and possibly thinking about what to do. She didn’t move to help him, she wanted him to discover the pace he was comfortable with and she will pick up from there. Normally it was her leading in the relationships because she had a clear idea of what she wanted and always found the way of getting it, so it was a nice change to have a real relationship with love involved because it changed everything. The only problem were their parents, they would get in the way. Her mother wouldn’t offer much resistance though but she didn’t know about Alex’s father… She shook her head to keep her worries to herself; she wasn’t going to get Alexei hurt by them now that he had finally figured out what he wanted. She couldn’t live without him; she had proved it so before doing such a horrible thing so she just needed to make them understand that and everything would be perfectly fine. Everything was possible and she certainly believed so when he was so close to her.
Sweet and simple, such gestures just like him. She didn’t need dozen of roses from him; one was more than enough because it held much more meaning. She slowly opened her eyes to find Alex’s hand almost touching her cheek; she looked up at him under her eyelashes, and the world stopped moving around them when he said those three words again, when he claimed the world he loved her, she couldn’t hear the music anymore, her heartbeat loud in her ears as he closed the distance between them. The moment his lips touched Anouk’s time stopped too, and stars collided all around her. Her mind went completely blank and all she could do was place a hand on his chest and looking for support on the counter when her legs gave her away. And it was over as sudden as it started, and it was so different from everything she had felt before. She knew it had to be different with him and so far she hadn’t been disappointed at all. The taste of his lips still lingered on her mouth and she smiled with her eyes still closed. He said something that didn’t click in her mind until a second later, when she had to come back to earth. “Yes, dinner, fine.” She muttered and it took her another whole second to start moving again.
Turning she gave the final touches to the food, hoping it would taste good and she wouldn’t mess up with it. “Are you going to set the table or are you going to keep staring at me?” She said joking as a few pops in the sauce indicated her that it was ready. “This is almost ready, now you will have the chance to taste my food for the very first time.” She had cooked back with her father a lot but never with her mother. It was some kind of tradition for her, and she just did it in very few and especial occasion. This, she believed, was the most especial of them all. The world could crash around her right at that moment and she wouldn’t care, she was in her happy place and for once it was real, it was all real. She had really kissed Alexei, and it had been so wonderful… She promised herself no one would ever kiss her again after this, apart from him of course. She was going to save her kissed for him until the very end, because he just deserved them all.

The fact that he had better reflexes and a controlled mind made it easy for Alexei to pull himself out of the kiss and speak. It was definitely weird, a few months ago he would never have thought of kissing Anouk, he’d have been probably disgusted by the idea, but here he was doing the ‘disgusting’ act that he thought it would be, but it was far from it. Way far. The ways he looked at him reinforced the fact into his head that she did love him and that she wasn’t going anywhere, any time soon, not that Alex would actually let her. He wanted her close to him, he wanted her to stay with him and not leave him at any time, he just wanted to cuddle up with her and be as lovey dovey as he possibly could because this was a relationship that he wanted to keep alive for as long as the flame could last. The kiss was indescribable, that was the only word that could sum up all the feelings that flared through his body the moment his lips touched Anouk’s. The moment he touched her, he wanted to hold her and just keep being pressed up to her, but he couldn’t do that, he had to be slow with this; both of them couldn’t be hurt during this entire relationship and he was going to be slow and careful to make sure of that. He waited for a second, slightly worried as she didn’t reply sooner to his answer but breathed a sigh of relief when she seemed to come crashing down from what she was on a high with.
He waited for a second, forgetting about the plates and the cutlery until she told him about them. He made a face at her, sticking his tongue out slowly before moving around her, grabbing two plates, two glasses and some forks and knives, he placed them on the table delicately before looking at Anouk. “I should have just kept staring at you, right?” He smirked at her a little, still feeling slightly awkward but the normal, friendly Alexei was making a comeback the more time he spent in the warm kitchen. He smiled and nodded his head, pulling a chair out for her to sit before walking around her and sitting not opposite her, but on the chair next to her so he could be close to her as much as possible. “Well, I’m glad I’ll be able to taste your cooking now, I can’t wait to tell you how bad you did. What you made me taste might have been good, but the rest of your food might not be.” He let out a small chuckle, an easy going grin placing itself on his face quite quickly. He held a fork in his hand, twirling it over and over slowly, how had his luck just changed so quickly? The gallery was sort of picking up, people booking places just to have a tour, it may have not seemed as big from the outside but on the inside it was huge, like the national galleries you saw everywhere. He just liked to give the idea that everything in his gallery was simple but it really wasn’t. “So, how did you get mom and dad to leave?”

Stars all around her, the world spinning around her and transforming everything in a blur of color that was what Anouk was seeing at the very moment. Her mind had gone totally blank; she had even forgotten her own name. She who had always been wondering how a real kiss would feel was now experiencing it with Alex, and it had taken her to places she had never known. How can a simple thing change so much depending of the person? Not even with Cass she had felt that way and he had been the closest boy to her in a while, taking into account than the other boys where mere toys to her. She took another deep breath to try settling her mind; she should be used to kissing by now right? She laughed a bit at herself as her pinkish cheeks finally recovered their normal color and she placed the steak in the tray. Alex finally picked the plates and set the table, she chuckled at his comment. She certainly wouldn’t have minded him staring at her forever with those loving brown eyes of him. “I believe that would have been the right thing to do.” She said in a soft sweet voice and smiled taking the chair he gallantry had pulled out for her. He was a real gentleman and she loved that about him, well she loved all about him to be honest, even the way he annoyed her sometimes was adorable. He took the other chair next to her so close she had to resist the urge of taking his hand. Serving both of them Anouk got ready to taste the first bite of her homemade food.
“Hey! My cooking is not bad at all.” She scolded at him, smacking him softly in the head. “I don’t think you would be able to do it better.” It was amazing how things took the normal curse in their relationship, talking and joking the same way they always did around each other. Anouk knew Alex was going to take thing slow with her because it was the way he was or maybe because he was still testing the waters between them. She was used to a fast-paced relationship, just like all the aspects of her life were, but it was a nice change to care enough for her as to take her feelings into consideration. But being completely honestly with herself, she very much doubted she could handle such a low-paced relationship. She wanted to cuddle with him, to hug him, to kiss him, to be near him every second of the day, and she had been holding back for such a long time that now the yearning was painfully unbearable. She smiled mischievously as Alex asked how she had managed to kick their parents out. That had been piece of cake. “I tossed their coats at them and then I pushed them down the hall and off the door without giving them an explanation.” She laughed shrugging at him while chewing her exquisite steak. “I think mom understood I was having someone important over.” She just didn’t know until when they were going to keep away from the house, and knowing their parents lovey-dovey acts they had still some hours ahead, more than enough.

Love. It was something that was spoken about since the world began really, an emotion that overtook people hen it came bearing down upon them, it was something that Alexei didn’t believe in. He didn’t think, or even believe that God had made someone for him in this world, he didn’t believe that he could feel this strongly about a person without wanting him or her to take his or her clothes off but he did feel strong about Anouk. He had this weird clammy feeling go up the back of his neck and down the palms of his hands whenever he heard her name or even think about her. Was this what love was supposed to be like? He didn’t know because this was probably the first time he felt this strong about a girl. Well apart from the first crush he actually ever had on a girl, it was when he was about fourteen years old back in secondary school, but you could never forget your first love/crush could you? At least, that was what Alexei heard and he was never going to bring it up in front of Anouk because he knew how overprotective and jealous she got; if how she reacted to Adrienne being his assistant was actually any indication then he knew how Anouk was likely to react. He smiled at her, shrugging at her answer. “But the woman wanted me to serve plates, so I couldn’t really do anything about it could I?” He shook his head with a fake pout on his lips as his eyes sort of smoldered over with a little bit of lust and love for her. He wanted to scoop her up in his arms and just keep her on his lap, but that would be taking things too far.
When they were both seated, he kept his hands underneath the table, flexing them wide open and then closed as Anouk served the food on their plates; he was greatly resisting the urge of just touching her. He smiled, leaning back I his seat and pulling his hands out and leaving them on the sides of his plate. “I agree, I probably won’t be able to do any better at all.” He chuckled and picked up his knife and fork, cutting into the tender meat quite quickly, he popped it into his mouth and chewed, showing no sign of impressiveness at all. After he chewed for a good ten seconds and was quite during the entire thing, he swallowed. “Well, that was definitely gorgeous, my, my, I see you can actually cook!” He let out a chuckle and took another bite of his food. He looked around the apartment for a second, not making eye contact with Anouk at all, he was suddenly back into his shy, introvert self but he didn’t want that. He ate slowly, quietly for the next few minutes and laughed as Anouk told him the story about how she kicked their parents out. “Well, I wouldn’t really class myself as important to the family…” He laughed, and took a sip of water, calming himself down for a good few seconds. “Anouk…I do love you so.” Now that those three words were out, he didn’t think that he could stop saying them.

So far things were going as great as they could… taking into account her new partner was Alexei. She loved the way he acted and talked and even breathed, but she didn’t know for how long she could keep her hands off him without scaring him away. He was such an old-fashioned gentleman that she had the urge of kicking his ass to wake him up a little bit. But she refrained herself from doing so because tonight was a especial romantic night for both of them and things just were awkward because he was still mulling over what he had said. Anouk had that warm fuzzy feeling in her chest that spread all over her body, and this time it wasn’t followed by the sharp pain of not being able to have him, because now if she wished so she could just break that little space between them with a few steps and hug him or stroke his face. She ran a hand through her hair and smiled, looking at him from over her shoulder. “You have answers for everything, don’t you?” She said chuckling softly as she had to suppress another urge of going there and hugging him. When in the world she had become so careful around him? She used to hug him after all and she had done so many other times, why was now different? Because it was going to mean something different. Maybe that was the reason Alex was being such a gentleman, because every movement of him, every kiss, every stare and every caress was going to mean that he loved her and the other way around.
For once things weren’t meaningless, for once it was love. She eyed Alexei anxiously as he chewed the meat, waiting for a word, praise or whatever. His face was expressionless and she had to grab another bite of her meat in order to not throw the fork at him. Finally he spoke and her face lit up completely at his words. “Really? I wasn’t really sure you will like it.” Since when she was so insecure? Oh right, since she was afraid of losing Alex now that she had finally got him. And then he said them again, those words that stopped her world and made her heart skip more than a few beats. Her breath caught on her throat and she was speechless. This time she didn’t stopped herself from getting up of her chair and throwing herself at him, surrounding his neck with her slender arms and burying her face on his neck, taking in his smell before whispering. “I love you too, more than anyone or anything else in this world.” She shouldn’t be afraid of him, she shouldn’t be afraid of losing him, because she wouldn’t. Something deep inside her told her so, that their love was deeper and stronger than anything that could be throw at them, and that they were going to get through everything as long as they were together. And she was going to make sure of it.

Being this intimate with his step sister was very awkward, not that he actually minded because now that he had the words in his head, now that he had said those three words to her, he didn’t feel as awkward as he should have been. Sure, he had told her he loved her before, but that was sibling love, it was something that meant very little and now those three words held their entire relationship up. It meant so much more and the words felt so much heavier every time they escaped from his mouth. He was a slow guy when it came to relationships but it was only because he thought that’s what girls wanted, they wanted someone romantic to hold their hands, someone to watch movies with them and hug them when they were sad, someone to just feel cozy and comfortable around and Alexei thought that slowing it down really was the way to do everything. Even though he knew that Anouk lived life at a fast pace, he thought that maybe this time she would like to take things slow. “Hmm, not everything I think, we’ll just have to see won’t we?” Flashing her another smile he took a deep breath before continuing with his dinner, the entire atmosphere just felt too lovey for his taste, but it was a good one, one that wasn’t at least smothering him to bits and pieces. He hoped that in this relationship he wouldn’t feel smothered, that Anouk wouldn’t be one of those girls that depended on him too much, but even the idea made him laugh because Anouk was always so independent and reliable, so there was no need to worry over a trivial matter like that, was there?
Even if the food didn’t taste once at all, Alexei was a master of his expressions and face so he would have told Anouk that he loved the food anyway, after all she had gone through so much trouble just to make this perfect dinner. She had kicked their parents out; had set herself up in the kitchen and spent ages just making this special for the both of them and he found it all so adorable and sweet, he wasn’t going to disappoint her in his end. He rolled his eyes at her, “Of course, I like whatever you do, don’t I?” He actually did, and ever since he figured out that he loved her, he actually liked everything that she did even more, even if it was just making a silly little face at him or showing off or doing something very annoying. He was slightly surprised when she pushed back her chair and threw her arms around his neck, gripping him into a hug. Smiling against her skin, he gently put his arms around her waist, and squeezed her lightly, closing his eyes as he took her entire body in. He stayed like that for a few seconds, not really wanting to let go and smiled as she spoke those three words back to him. “I’m glad that you do, that just made my day.” He smiled, pulling back from the hug and making sure she was still bent over; he angled his face upwards and placed a gentle kiss on her cheek. This was definitely the best day of his life so far.

Anouk was no clingy girl at all, she just loved her personal space and freedom way too much to act like those girls who spent day and night glued to their boyfriends. But she was very dependant of him in a way; She needed reassurance, she needed him telling he loved her until she was able to believe it for herself. She needed Alexei to live and that scared her to death. It had been that way all along but she had never really given it second thought since it was impossible for them to be together. Now that they were, though, things were completely different and there was the possibility of losing him. Still, she needed to tone it all down a bit and calm herself, convince herself that he wasn’t going to leave her anytime soon, that he won’t get his words back either and tell her how wrong he had been and that he didn’t really loved her. She shrugged letting the matter go, there was no point in discussing over something so stupid. But that was the way it had always been between the two of them, bickering and picking at each other like kids. But now it was way different, it was sweeter, it was… cute. And to think she had always been mad at her parents for being too lovey-dovey all the time, now she knew how they felt. She had that incontrollable urge of giggling over everything with an idiotic loving grin in her face which she suppressed. A sigh of relief escaped her lips as Alex gave his approbation to her food. She knew she was good at cooking, her father had taught her well and always praised her meals, but coming from Alex, someone who had never tasted her food and was not related to her whatsoever and didn’t have the obligation of praising her, well it was different and meant way more.
Anouk actually had put a lot of effort in the whole evening and she wished Alex was a little bit more… affectionate towards her. She knew it was awkward for him since up until recently he had seen her as nothing more like a sister, it didn’t matter all the previous efforts she had done to change that fact back then, he never gave her the glances he was giving her now. It was nice to have a slow paced relationship but it needed more… touch. And she wasn’t meaning sex at all, it was those… accidental caresses, or holding hands, or just… that need she had of touching him, of keeping him forever. “Well, I don’t know that, you never said it before.” She said laughing and raising an eyebrow at him. It was nice having him saying those three words, she never got tired of hearing them but she also never entirely believed them. And not because she doubted Alex, but because she was insecure and afraid of getting her hopes too high to just be crashed down. So it felt wonderful when he hugged her back even if it was just for a moment, it felt so marvelous the warm of his body pressed against her. She leaned a bit into his kiss, and fire spread from where he pressed his lips towards her whole body. “I always did, you just were too blind to see it.” She explained shrugging her shoulders and going back to her seat, offering him a warm smile. Taking another bite of her food and a sip of water Anouk tried to think of something to do after the dinner and so far nothing came to her mind. “So, do you have something in mind after this?”

From everything that had happened in the past few months, he knew how important he was to Anouk, he knew how much she loved him and how far her love went for him, he didn’t know exactly how he felt about that. The first word that sprung to his mind was ‘flattered,’ he was flattered that she thought so much about him, that she loved him to an extent that made him want her himself. But he was scared to, imagine if he did something wrong? When he didn’t love her back she had tried to take her own life, imagine if she did that again? If he accidentally did something that made her upset? It would be his entire fault and he knew that, that was why he was trying so hard, he was trying hard to make this relationship work, but even by doing so, that meant he could even break their relationship. Some people’s relationships tore apart by the seams because both tried too hard, some because they didn’t try too hard, but just leaving their relationship up to fate and destiny wasn’t a good idea either, was it? There were so many factors which could and which already had played a part in their relationship and it scared Alexei quite a bit because anything could happen. He knew that he was thinking too much of their relationship, he should have been sitting back, enjoying the dinner with his love and just being happy, but there were so many problems that could arise at any moment, so many that could be entirely due to him. It was just a horrible idea that had stuck inside of his head ever since he realised that he loved Anouk, it was taunting him and disturbing him and it wasn’t going to get any better that he knew. He knew that if he told Anouk stuff like that she’d get very upset so he never said anything about it all, not that he really ever had time because he had just recently told her about his feelings.
He smiled softly at her and nodded his head, “Then you’ll be hearing it from me more often.” He eyed her up, not in a leering sort of way, but in a way in which he thought that she was indeed beautiful and that he was definitely lucky to have her. A relationship was going to be difficult to keep between the both of them; it was going to be very difficult. Living in a house where your parents hardly ever went out because they wanted to snuggle up to one another was annoying. He hoped that his parents would leave at least for a few weeks, it would be better for the both of them if that ever happened. “Horrible that I’m always blind when it comes to you isn’t it?” He shook his head against her body before letting her go back to her seat, he smiled awkwardly at her and took another sip of his water, watching her do the same thing. He rolled his eyes upwards, thinking about what they should do later but sadly he couldn’t come up with anything, he wasn’t really a person who planned everything, he didn’t know. What if he wanted to do something that she didn’t want to do? Then it would be just plain awkward. “I don’t really know, I guess we could do whatever you want to do?” He smiled at her, picking up his knife and fork again.

She had spent too much time in the past learning Alex’s facial expressions and body language, so she knew when he was thinking about something unpleasant or uncomfortable. Right at the moment he was feeling troubled but she couldn’t figure out why. She wished he would open to her a bit more just like she had wished so many other times but she was in no position to ask, Anouk had been hiding too much secrets during far too long to ask that from him now. All she wanted was for him to be happy and she had sacrificed a lot already to make sure of it. But what now? She had her doubts about how well Alexei could handle all this, he who had been always so down to earth and tried to do the right thing, he who always mulled over everything way too much for his own good, and of course blamed it all on himself. Was he going to get burnt in this relationship because he worried too much about her? She frowned and pondered asking him what was wrong. She wasn’t sure she wanted to know anyway but… what if her fear was really coming true and he really didn’t love her despise the words he had said? It was better knowing about it than faking through all this. And she was sure this time she could handle being broken hearted anyway, she could always cling to that new strength of hers… that could vanish pretty quickly at the same time too, but at least she had to try. She had sworn to herself that there wouldn’t be more secrets between them, at least no more than the necessary ones because being honest; there were things that just should be kept in the shadows.
Taking a deep breath she decided to simply go for it and ask. Especially since she heard him saying that, she knew he was blaming himself again on something she had did to herself and that was entirely her decision and fault. She wasn’t ever going to forgive herself for hurting him in such a way, that pain she had for doing it was never going to vanish and the thin scar on her left wrist was going to always remind her of her selfish act, it was her own way of torturing herself. Not that she was ever going to let him know that. “Alex, what’s wrong? What are you thinking about?” If he had something to tell her, he better do it now that there was still time for her to heal and get over things. As much as she loved she could let him go if that was necessary, she hoped as hell it wasn’t because that was the best day of her life and she didn’t want it ruined at all. “No, it’s not horrible, I did a good job hiding it from everyone. It was my doing, not your fault.” She said reassuring and then her mind jumped quickly looking for something to do that would distract them both for their fears and doubts. How worst could it get anyway? She smiled at him when something came up. “How about a walk to the river and a romantic time in a boat?” She had seen them during nights, full of lights and people laughing and enjoying their trip down the river, with a romantic air to it. She had always wanted to do something like that with him but up until now there had never been a chance.

The horrible thing about having being in the presence of Anouk for the past five years was that she had grown accustomed to his expressions; she knew what he felt and what he wanted to say. She knew when he was hiding something and when he was thinking about something, it was sometimes annoying because she would always ask him what was wrong and he didn’t want to say. He always tried to control his expressions but once he was far away, deep into his thoughts, he really had no control over his facial expressions then. It was annoying because he knew that once he had snapped out of it, she’d be worried about what he was thinking about and he didn’t want her to be worried. He didn’t want her to figure out the truth because he didn’t want her to get upset. He loved her so much and didn’t want her to get hurt by whatever he was thinking about, it was just inevitable from stopping these thoughts coming into his head. He was always the one worrying over something, he always thought about the consequences in comparison to Anouk, he didn’t know why he was like this but he had to think like that. Everything in life had consequences, a fire resulted in someone dying, cheating could result in expulsion and there were so many reasons as top why you had to think about the consequences. He tried to compose his face as best as he could when he finally snapped out of it, no reason to bring anything upsetting into their first sort of date slash dinner, he didn’t want her to start thinking about his complex mind while they were supposed to be having fun. So once he finally focused on her, he smiled, flashing a bit of teeth at her to show that he was completely fine.
He raised an eyebrow as she questioned him on the matter, but he shook his head quickly. Leaning forward he gently picked up her hand and traced circles on the back of her hand with his thumb. “Nothing’s wrong, everything’s fine.” He smiled at her, his words sort of coming out strained but he did his best to make her not worried, although he knew that she would push him to tell her, but he was hoping she wouldn’t. He wanted this night to be perfect and it was going perfect until his mind decided to have a panic attack and think about the whole situation, but right now they were fine, they didn’t have any problems at all. He rolled his eyes at her words and shook his head, pulling his other hand out from underneath the table; he put one underneath her hand while his other hand was on top. “Shh, nothing was your fault ok? It was...” He was about to say it was his fault but he knew they would have some sort of argument over this so he bit his tongue quite quickly and kept his mouth shut for a second or so before continuing. “It was none of our faults.” He smiled at her, squeezing her hand in between his own. He smiled at her suggestion and nodded quickly, eager to get away from the horrible topic that they were beginning to go deep into; he didn’t want that to happen at all. “That sounds perfect.” He was slightly worried that someone would see them, but if it was to get away from this topic than he would do it. “Just finish eating and we’ll go soon, grab a coat too, it’s quite chilly outside.” He gave her hands another small squeeze before removing his own, trying to finish off his food quickly so that they could be out of the house soon.
