on a first impression, gareth could be called distant. he doesn't make friends easily, and prefers his own company to that of others. when gareth does something, he means it. he only smiles when he's truly happy and only apologizes when he thinks someone deserves it. because of that, he can sometimes be mistaken as prideful, but he's really not. he just believes that there's a correct time and place for everything. pride has nothing to do with it.
one of the only times that he's ever really open are around children and dogs (not small ones, he considers them rats). and of course, when he's behind the camera, but that's so obvious that it doesn't even count. when he's happy, he shows it by constantly smiling and joking around, even flirting some times, though it's normally not something he approves of.
speaking of that, romance is the main reason that gareth is so reserved and distant. he's constantly afraid of getting involved with someone; it would be like his personal hell. he has a fear of being abandoned that stemmed from some certain events in his childhood. who wouldn't? of course, it left him with multiple fears that make it extremely hard for him to find a girlfriend (or even normal friends)... but he's trying to fix it.

every family has problems, and compared to some dysfunctional little groups, the family that oliver and alison started was quite normal. sadly, once you compared them to happy families, they were in no fit shape to have kids. it was an abusive marriage, though, oddly enough, oliver was the victim. and how did alison respond when she got pregnant, of all things? like a lot of unwilling parents, she wanted to get rid of the child the first chance she got. if she couldn't so that while she was pregnant, alison was planning on giving the kid away for adoption... but she never followed through.
oliver never stood up for his rights, the typical victim. but he had always wanted a kid, and who was alison to say he couldn't keep the one that they were already having? for the first time in five years, oliver toulson spoke his mind, and paid the consequence. lots of consequences, but after an argument that even the neighbors could hear, he eventually convinced alison not to give gareth away for adoption. the only catch was that alison really wasn't interested in sticking around oliver as long as he had his own mind. maybe it would have ended better if she had told him that earlier, but as it played out, gareth got to spend two happy years of his childhood before his father was practically kicked out of the house and his mother remarried.
oliver, denied his happy ending, moved to orlando, florida. his now ex-wife and child stayed in wales and started a new little family with someone that alison had been seeing behind oliver's back for about a year. a new little girl, chelsea, was born two years after that. and who needed the leftovers of alison's past marriage when she and keith had their own happiness? no, gareth didn't follow suit and leave the house as his father did, but he never gained as much attention as his darling little half sister. he didn't care, though. school was fine, he had friends, and starting from the age of twelve, he was already taking an interest in photography.
once every summer, gareth would go to orlando for a few weeks to visit his father. the first visit (gareth was ten at the time, as his mother didn't trust him to see his father before that) came as quite a shock to him. oliver really had gained his own mind after he left alison, and that shined clear when his son came to visit him in the sunny state. he was sleeping around now, but oliver toulson wasn't the victim anymore. not in the least bit. gareth didn't get to learn all of the details about his father's new love life, but the adult didn't bother to hide the basics. if this was what happened whenever someone divorced, gareth didn't really want to get in a relationship with anyone! and to think that he had to visit his new version of a father every summer... no, that wouldn't do. he only suffered one more visit before cutting off contact with his father, and hasn't seen him since.
