PERSONALITY,
honestly, there are two sides to august, though they're similar in most ways. when he's not taking pills, he's easily irritable and tends to ignore people, but he's not rude in the sense of the word. whether on or off pills, he's an easy person to get along with if you already know him. gust smiles and laughs around his friends, and is dedicated to those he loves, but it's harder for him to get along with strangers when he's not taking his pills. he's more like his old self when he's, for lack of a better word, lucid. it's sad, really, how dependent he is on diazepam, but aren't all addicts like that once they get to a certain point?
he needs his pills just to feel normal nowadays, but he doesn't really act normal when he's on them. he's much more relaxed, both physically and emotionally, almost to the point of being lazy. it affects the way he teaches, too; he starts letting the students fend for their selves a bit more, instead of walking them through all the bits of the class that they're having problems with. he could almost be called lazy, but he still cares about how the students do. anyway, when he can, he tries to avoid taking his diazepam during work. he may rely on it, but august is still aware of what it does to him in some part of his mind.

HISTORY,
throughout his childhood, august could only be called.. awkward. he didn't make friends easily, and preferred his own company to that of others. he was also slightly panicky, and jumped at loud noises or threatening movements, which really didn't help him earn any respect from other kids. in fact, it led to quite a bit of bullying, which he endured throughout school. his parents tried to help sometimes, as they wanted him to be charismatic and generally successful in life. what kind of parent doesn't want that? adala and lorenz were a little more controlling about it, though, and always gave august a little frown when something went wrong for him. what his parents did didn't affect him too much, though; contrary to the twitching and awkwardness, he had pretty high self esteem, and barely anything could change that. he even grew out of most of it by the time he was a teenager, but even so, he still wasn't very social.
growing up in berlin, the german city of lights and art, august was constantly surrounded by certain influences. smoking was one of them, but luckily, he was never pushed to try it by the friends that he didn't have. another influence was art, and that was something that august actually grew to pay some attention to. he had never expressed any talent for painting or writing in school, though, which was a little setback. when he was fifteen, he asked his parents if they could enroll him in a youth theater. just as a hobby, he assured them, because adala and lorenz fully expected their child to grow up to be a lawyer or a doctor, or some sort of stuffy job along those lines. money making jobs, they declared. that was what they wanted august to do for a living, but when he got a little too attached to acting for their tastes, they dealt with it. they weren't that controlling, and didn't want to rip away their son's dream. hopefully, it was just a phase that he would grow out of.
but august didn't grow out of that phase, nothing near it. over the years, he just got better and better at acting, all the while keeping his normal school grades up to par. he'd found something that he was actually good at, and his parents accepted that after a while. as long as he kept up with schoolwork, which he did, they agreed to send him to an arts university after he completed gymnasium and abitur. well, he did that, and his parents kept their end of the little deal and shipped him off to a university on the edge of germany, where he got a degree in teaching and took a few acting classes at the same time. it was one of the best times of his life, and he even found a steady girlfriend. after graduation, she began working at a school in berlin, and august moved to france and got a teaching job at la lumineuse. they kept up a long distance relationship. happy ending, right?
wrong. since when does anyone get a fairytale ending these days? long distance relationships never really work out well, and while visiting his girlfriend one summer, august found out that she was cheating on him with a woman. how nice. he didn't let it show until he returned to france, but having that happen was extremely upsetting for him. he'd thought that for once, someone had found a happy ending, but no. august slipped into alcoholism, drinking at least once a week. he wasn't depressed, but he wasn't in a good place, until some of his friends helped him pull out of his rut and get some help. he was able to pull himself away from drinking after a few tries, and his doctor prescribed diazepam to help with the anxiety and agitation of alcohol withdrawal. it helped, but a few weeks into the pills, he forgot to take one of his four daily doses.
even though august's doctor had instructed him on what to do if he forgot, august had never been great at remembering things like that. he took a double dose to make up for the missed one, and fell into that little.. habit. well, to put it simply, august was addicted to the slight high that he experienced when he took too much of the relaxant, and he hasn't been able to break out of that habit. it's been going on for a few years now, and even after he stopped the original prescription for the drug, he somehow managed to continue getting it. august has been developing a tolerance, though, seeing as he's been taking it for much longer than he should have, and the amounts he's needed are getting larger and larger. august isn't really sure what to do anymore, but he's been continuing for his job and hoping to hold off the inevitable overdose for just a bit longer.
