it was the first time audrey hathaway took a step outside of her comfort zone and decided to do the 'blind date' business. the people of paris were never that interested in her, but all of a sudden they seemed to be. and she was never interested in other boys, but now she seemed to be. it was perhaps the overwhelming knowledge that she had received about her friends relationships pushed her to do things that she normally wouldn't have done. she just needed to feel that there were people out there with her own problem, and maybe it was time to accept that the people she surrounded herself with just didn't find her attractive. the girl suffered from low self esteem, it was something that she just always struggled with. ever since she was a child and could understand what place she had in england's social ladder.
the girl woke up early and took a shower. she didn't eat anything, even if she did it would come out the same way that it came in. it was something that helped her stay thin and pretty. she needed to be thinner though, she gained a couple of pounds because of the last three months she spent around her family. she just couldn't bring herself to puke up her food around them, even if eating three healthy meals a day made her sick to her stomach. the blonde decided to wear a jeweled dress, hoping that it didn't seem extravagant. her hair was neatly tied up into a bun, and she was extra careful with her make up that day. it wasn't every day that she was dressing up for a boy, and she hoped that he wasn't someone who would hate her.
audrey hathaway had no idea what kind of boy he was, but they decided to meet up at a restaurant. she knew better than to agree, but how was she supposed to turn down jaykob vaux's offer. where else would they go besides to go eat lunch together? lunch was a good thing, it was a great time to get to know the other person. there would be lots of time to talk, and to exchange ideas and analyze the other's thought process. but there was the food- how could she eat in front of another person when she doesn't eat on a regular basis? she was too polite to say no, and too shy to suggest meeting someplace else. besides, when she went to get a tarot reading, the women told her that any new enterprises in love or career show great potential. so even if this wasn't going to be love, might as well have another friend and another person on her side... right?
it was the day after christmas, and she hoped that he wouldn't mind a late christmas gift. it was just like her, she enjoyed giving everything she had away. in her bag was a box wrapped up with wrapping paper, inside it was a small watch. it wasn't a big deal or anything, she just felt like men liked watches and it was the holiday season. sharing is caring, which is what her mother always told her. the girl rode in the taxi and exchanged small talk with the driver, to her luck, he was also from the mothercountry. they spoke freely in english and talked about tea and the queen. it was nice to talk to a brit who didn't stare at her with his mouth open.
she walked into the restaurant, le grand vefour. it was the first grand restaurant in paris, and she had came here before with her father on a political meeting with the french minister. it was not a cheap restaurant to go to, but she felt completely at ease. it was the surroundings that she had grown up with and lived with all through her life. the china and the pictures were beautiful, but the large mirrors made her feel uneasy. she would be able to see her fat, ugly reflection; something she tended to avoid even in her own home. she sucked in her breath and smiled at the waiter. i'd like a glass of water, please. she shook her head at his question, she would wait until jaykob arrived to order. she didn't know what she would eat- not because of the price, but because she needed to count up the calories. the blonde put her jacket on the chair and a napkin across her lap, flipping through the menu.
she was nervous. what kind of boy would jaykob be? would he like her? or would it be just another big failure and mistake?

If there was one thing people knew about Jaykob Daniel Vaux, was that he never, ever, dated. Sure he had kissed girls, and loved to party but as soon as it came to asking a girl out, planning a date, and just talking about feelings- the boy ran the complete opposite direction as fast as he could. It wasn’t because he was scared or anything… well partly him being scared but the other was the fear of not being good enough, specially with his illness. So when he saw the opportunity for a blind date, well it was no guess that his first words were “no”. But that changed shortly after, especially when his friends kept persisting that he did it. If the boy had climbed the pyramids of Peru, he could surely go on a simple date with a nice girl. Right?
He had tried to figure out of a perfect place to go to. He didn’t want to seem like he didn’t care about the date, but he also didn’t want to seem like an egotistic rich guy- which he certainly wasn’t. He had searched endlessly until he came up with Le Grand Vefour, it was a rather classic restaurant, but the atmosphere was said to be friendly and pleasing for a great date. So he suggested the place, and to his surprise she had said yes. And that’s when his nerves begun.
Although they had agreed on the place, he didn’t have any clue about her. And maybe that was the good thing about this, he didn’t have to be anything else, or prove anything because she hopefully didn’t expect much-like most people did. Yea he was a funny guy, who loved to have fun and crack jokes but at times he liked to sit down and watch a movie, instead of being all hyper and somewhat crazy. Thinking about more and more, he was glad he had chosen a lunch date, he could sit down and just talk-face to face with a hopefully nice girl. Not to mention good quality food.
He dug through his closet trying to look for something fairly decent that didn’t involve jeans or sneakers. Which in the closet of an artist, anything but those things were hard to find. However, he had found some nice slacks, and dress shoes that his mother had made him pack for special occasions. Digging through his closet a little more he found a dress shirt, and a sweater to go over it. He had to make a good impression, this was a major thing for him, and hopefully for Audrey as well.
He had called his mother and asked for advice for what to give her. Not only because it was the day after Christmas, but also because it was a vaux tradition to give their dates a present. Through much argument and refutation they came up with the perfect solution, a charm bracelet. And so with the bracelet in a small gift wrapped box in his pocket, he had driven to the restaurant with nerves all over the place.
He was very struck by the restaurant, although his family back in Australia was from wealth he had chosen to stay closer to nature rather than indoors. He had chosen the reckless and free passion of art, instead of a workaholic profession. Lets just say his aussie side loved the outback like his own house. Thus, Le Grand Vefour was definitely out Jay’s element. As he smiled to the Maître de “Hi, I’m looking for my date- reservation under Vaux?” as the Maître De directing him to the proper table he sucked in a breath as he saw the girl sitting there. She was definitely breathtaking.
He thanked the Meitre de, he smiled softly at Audrey. “ Is a pleasure to finally meet you Audrey” he said softly. He was definitely out of his comfort zone, but with the girl in front of him he didn’t mind. Sitting down, he placed the napkin on his lap. “I’m sorry I'm late, but an Australian driving in France should be against the law” He joked lightly.

audrey looked up when he called her name, her stomach twisted into a knot and she managed to give a shy smile. hello, nice to meet you too jaykob. the girl replied, her hands instantly playing with the napkin in her lap. she didn't know what to say, and she felt a little bit more at ease when he joked. he was the talker; which made her job easier. she would really just have to listen to what he said. oh no, i just got here, the girl said sweetly, looking back into his eyes. she gave a small giggle, and replied back don't worry about it, i'm sure that brits don't drive any better.
audrey had never driven behind a wheel before. she never had to, all she really did was stay at home when she was in britain. besides, even in paris she lived close enough to just about everywhere to just walk or ride a taxi if she was desperate. the girl was vaguely aware of the silence that followed, as she flipped through the menu that the meitre de gave her. her eyes gazed over to the salad section, and if all else failed that's what she would have. the prices were quite modest for a restaurant like this, and she hoped that he wouldn't insist on paying. she had more money in her purse than his family probably had.
the blonde looked back at him, studying the equally blond man. so, how are you doing today? she asked in french, her accent showing. french wasn't her strongest language, although she had lived here for about a year now; she still felt awkward speaking it. she often mistook the word for tie and shrimp, which was the cause of many jokes among her circle of friends. french was about precision, while english- well, there were different dialects and ways to pronounce things. it was more about preference.
the waiter walked over, asking to take their orders. audrey hesitated for a moment before answering in a soft voice, a small vegan salad please, with the sauce on the side. audrey wasn't a vegan, she was more of a vegetarian, but it didn't matter. anything that had less calories was better than things that had more. and milk and cheese had more calories and fat than regular carrots did. the girl looked uncertainly up at the man.
she waited uncomfortably as the waiter left with their orders, the girl not really knowing what to say or what to do. she sipped a glass of her water and then took a deep breath. so, you're from australia? how are things down there? she asked cheerfully in english, giving him a tiny smile. about a million thoughts and questions popped up in her head- what did he think of her? what was he thinking? what was going on in his head?- but she forced them aside. the girl wasn't quite sure on what kind of person he was- but he was a joker. and jokers are usually talkers... or at least that's what cass was.
she looked around the restaurant, and saw another political figure from france who her father had supported. he caught her eye and gave a little smile and nod- which audrey returned. her blue gaze flickered over to her date, hoping that he didn't catch that. and if he did, she hoped that he didn't recognize the politician. she refused and thought that he didn't have any idea what place he was suggesting when he asked her to come here. she hoped that he had just seen the good reviews and thought it was a normal restaurant to go to. not some place that had crazy prices and rich people around. she hoped that he was just a regular boy who just had bad luck in choosing restaurants.
there was no doubt that the atmosphere made her at ease and comfortable. if her father was here, perhaps, things would have gone more smoothly for her. she was sure that jaykob wouldn't appreciate being surrounded by her parents, but that's what would make her comfortable. audrey had always been sheltered from the outside world, now that she lived in it for one year, she understood what her parents intentions were. audrey was just so self conscious, she couldn't do a daily act without analyzing the people around her and thought about what they would think of what she did.
sometimes, audrey thought that she should have gone into another major. art or modeling. both of those had little to do with human interaction, and she thought that she would fare better in those subjects than in music. music was complicated, it helped her "escape" in some ways, but it also brought her more stress. there was this one boy, david, who helped her not to be nervous around others when performing. it helped just a little bit- she still didn't and couldn't perform around people. she was just too nervous and just too scared on what they would think.
she had good reasons for being scared and self-conscious, if another had their face plastered over the news and over magazines with scathing remarks, then they would be like her as well. paranoid and unable to function like a normal person. england's political affairs had gotten a hold of paris as well; she had to be even more careful now than she had been only four months ago. she was tired of being careful, tired of watching to see what people thought of her, and tired of being herself. she just wanted to escape the pressure and the media attention.
it's not like she could anyways. she was born under her parents, and some people would kill her to be where she was right now. it was ironic, because she would kill to have a regular person's life. she didn't care about the money or the fame or the riches or the people that she got to surround herself with. the girl just wanted to be a normal person.
