He wasn’t sure why he had signed up to the Secret Santa, he had no need of a girlfriend and his schedule was tight enough as it was. But Fred had thought it was a good funny thing and well he got the chance to meet someone from outside his dancing circle. His random date was Lily, a girl he didn’t remember meeting or talking to before, maybe passing by in the halls but nothing more than that. This was a good chance to spend some time with people too in this holidays because he didn’t have time to go back home for Christmas, he had to stay and train his body from when everything started again. Fred couldn’t slack off his dancing, he had to train every day, go to the gym and keep his daily routine. From time to time though he wanted to be a normal boy and that’s how Lily came to the picture. Aara had vanished from his life which meant he was open again to meet new girls and make new friends, it was a pity thought because they clicked easily. Appealing to his gentleman side he planned things this time, but nothing ahead of the dinner at the restaurant, depending on how that went then he will be his random creative self.
He had left a note for her, telling her to be ready at six so he could pick her up. Fred was currently getting ready at his house, some black trousers, white shirt, a jacket… he was more the comfortable kind, jeans and a shirt, but the occasion called for something more sophisticated and he spend more time than he used to in front of the mirror. Taking the keys of his car he drove to the direction he got to pick her up in his car, smiling and tapping the fingers in the wheel. Soon enough he was there and he got out of the car to knock on the door, looking at himself before she opened the door and dusting his clothes off in case he wasn’t presentable enough. Fred wasn’t nervous, he wasn’t that kind of guy, he just wanted the girl to feel comfortable with him. He had wanted to bring her some flowers but that was so cliché, his mother had always taught him to be original and gentleman like so he bought some origami paper and made a flower with it. She finally opened the door and he smiled to her, doing a little bow. “Hello! You look stunning.” Fred took the flower out of his pocket and gave it to her. “Here for you. Shall we go?” He offered her his arm and walked her to the car.

lily i linger in the doorway
‚What the hell was i thinking?’ Lily thought while she was pacing through her room with a cigarette in the hand. Deciding that if she was spending Christmas in Paris, she should take part in the secret Santa. A game in which she got a blind date with some person… A couple of days ago she found out it was Frederic Sid Roux, a boy who was on year younger than her – a dancer. Lily could remember seeing him in the hallways, but they never talked to each other. From what Lily remembered of seeing him, Frederic was pretty decent looking guy. He was tall and just nice-to look at guy… She could’ve been out worse from the secret Santa…
It was five thirty, which meant that Lily had another half an hour before Frederic picked her up. Her hair and make up were already done, but she was still in her underwear with a cigarette in her hand. She took a drag and looked at the mirror. Her hair was curled so that it was just until the middle of her neck. Her eyes were darker than usual, underlined with a little kohl, dark silver eye shadow and mascara. Her cheeks gleamed in a light rose and her lips were covered in a nude lipstick. Lily took another drag of her cigarette and turned to her bed. One purple and one black dress were lying there. Holding them both up, Lily finally chose the black one. You were always on the safe side with a Little-Black-Dress… Lily got dressed and took one final look at her. She looked… a little overdone, if you asked her her, but she looked pretty. Lily smiled to herself and lit another cigarette. She had another five minutes until Frederic was supposed to pick her up. As she heard the knock, Lily slide into her only pair of pumps - beige ones, and opened the door.
In front of her was standing Frederic in a pair of black trousers and a white shirt. Lily couldn’t help but smile. She wasn’t overdressed. Hey. Thank you. You don’t look bad yourself. Lily said with her deep British accent and smiled. As Frederic handed her the flower she could help but laugh. How cute was that? He was a gentleman that was clear… Lily looked up to meet his eyes and smiled. Thank you. And yes I am starving! Lily followed Frederic to his car and got inside. She turned to him and studied his face. He was a really handsome guy… How comes you are not in home for the Christmas holiday? Lily asked and looked at Frederic.

He really didn’t want to spend Christmas alone, Frederic was a guy who liked to be around people and make them happy. He couldn’t afford going back home for the holidays, though his father didn’t like it one little bit he wouldn’t be alone, his aunts and the rest of the family would be there to fill his place. So he wasn’t worried about his father being alone back home, but he certainly was. Maybe that was the reason making him to sign up for the Secret Santa date but Fred never needed reasons to do things, he just… took spontaneous decisions and went with them as crazy as they could be. At least his date was quite a fine girl and it seemed he would have a good time. When she opened the door he smiled widely, she was stunning too, maybe even more than Aara but he never got the chance to see her in party clothes. Anyway, this girl’s smile was gorgeous and he had the feeling he was going to have an amazing night with her. He smiled at her and gave a little bow. “Brilliant because I am taking you to a French traditional food restaurant.” Fred opened the door for her with a smiled and closed it behind her.
Le Procope was a very cozy restaurant, it wasn’t very expensive because he couldn’t afford something like that but at least it was an elegant place and very comfortable to be there. He looked at her as he started the engine. “Well, I couldn’t afford going back home this holidays, and I have a very strict training.” Eyeing her he smiled at her. “What about you? How come you are spending holidays here and not with family? Because you are not from here obviously.” She had a cute British accent that was very musical to listen to, not like the romantic edge French had but it was cute and funny. He parked near the street and opened the door for her, offering her his hand to help her out of the car. “Et viola!” He said pointing to the restaurant. “I hope you like French food, if not we can always go to another place.” He didn’t want to do it all on his own in case she felt uncomfortable, there were a lot of things about her he didn’t know and he didn’t want to mess it up.
He allowed her in first and then asked for their table, smiling all the while. “Now tell me, what are you majoring? I hadn’t seen you around the auditorium or the dance studio, which means you are not majoring dance.” Most girls usually thought he was gay because he did ballet, at some point he started to not care and just let them think whatever they wanted to think. If the girl was really worth it then he would give it a try convincing her he wasn’t. Some of them didn’t believe him either even after that, but what could he do? Dancing was his passion and he was done denying it and trying to fit in like the rest.

lily i linger in the doorway
Now when she was already on her date, Lily knew she was right as she signed up for the Secret Santa. She couldn’t imagine spending another day on her own in her small apartment or in some park – drawing. It was just too depressing. She hadn’t been at home two years now. It was just too expensive to get to the place she came from. Of course, Lily missed her parents and they missed her but all of them knew it was for the best. If Lily had stayed in Clovelly she would’ve become a tailor, like her mother. Not that she disrespected the life her parents lived in any way, but it just wasn’t her life.
As Lily opened the door, she smiled even wider than before. She had to be honest, he was a very handsome guy and the smile that he shoot at her made her knees go a little weak. As Fred told her they were going to a French restaurant she couldn’t help but giggle. It was, to be honest, her first date in France and it looked like Frederic was going to make it perfect. No, it’s perfect. I like French Food… I even work in a French food bistro myself… She smiled. She was thankful to have the job she had. Without it she would have been either back in England or living on the street. Lily smiled as Frederic opened and closed his car’s door so that she could get in comfortably. Gentleman, no doubt.
Lily nodded with understanding as he told her he didn’t have enough of money to go home for the holiday. She knew in what kind of situation he was then…. It was the same situation she was in. So obvious I’m from England? I hope my accent doesn’t annoy you, it does a lot of people… It happen often that people didn’t want to talk to her that much because of her accent… But true it was a really strong accent and she talked like she was in the 1850’s… Lily turned to Fred and smiled sadly.Same story…I haven’t been home since I moved here… That means two years… she sighted and looked at her hands. Everytime she had to think or talk about her hometown she got sad… But as she looked up she saw him parking the car and smiled. He opened the door for her and helped her out. Merci, Monsieur. she smiled and looked to him again. And as I already said, I love French food so you’ve got 10 points already. she smiled and entered the restaurant.
As they sat on their table, Lily already felt absolutely comfortable with Frederic. The thing that they barely knew each other and she still felt like she could trust him was surprising. She smiled and answered his question. I am majoring art…You are a dancer, right? There is no art like dance for me… I wish could dance…. she smiled and tilted her head to the side studying his face. In the village where I was born, there was no single one dancing studio or something..The first time I watched ballet I saw the Nutcracker… It was so beautiful I couldn’t stop crying… Like for real… she giggled and took the menu. Let’s have a glass of wine what do you think? I would love to have a glass of Bordeaux… she smiled and looked at him.

It was great to be out and about and not in his apartment training or in the gym. Fred loved his dancing, it was his passion and pretty much absorbed all his time but sometimes he needed a break like everyone else. When he saw her Fred knew it had been the right thing to do because she seemed cheerful, her smile was gorgeous and he felt comfortable with her. It was sad he couldn’t spend his Christmas with his father, it was his first year in Paris though and everything was exciting and new. He was out of his house, on his own, living his life. He was glad he had made the right choice taking her to a French restaurant, he tended to do things… in the flow of them moment, doing what he felt like doing without giving it second thoughts, he never planed things unless it was necessary because he had enough planning in his daily life as it was. “Really? That’s great. I didn’t work much to be honest, I don’t have the time.” He was really glad her mother had raised him to be a gentleman and that his father took after her when she passed away because that made things easier for him with girls and helped him make them comfortable.
He laughed and nodded, shaking his head when she suggested her accent might annoy him. “Yes, it is very obvious, but I find it really cute and funny.” Fred shot her another of his smiles, he was always a little flirty and charming, and sometimes it came out without him realizing. He tapped his fingers on the wheel listening to the soft sadness in her voice. He wanted to pat her hands to reassure her at least she wasn’t going to be alone but he hold back and kept his hands on the wheel. Instead, he tried to make her laugh. “Two years! You are so fragile and petite you look younger than me!” He said winking at her, Fred was quite tall to be a dancer but average in height, he was also well built thanks to hours on the gym and training to be able to hold the girls in the air while dancing and all that jazz he had to do so he tended to look older than he really was. Parking the car he laughed when she thanked him in French because it sounded British to him. “De rien, mademoiselle.”
With a smile he held the chair out for her and watched her sit before doing it himself. Taking the menu he eyed it while answering her questions. What was with him and artist? Aara had been an artist too; maybe it was their different life style what made him felt better and comfortable. “Yes I am a dancer, and in my defense they force me to wear those clothes.” He laughed, looking at her with a smile on his face. “I can’t draw to save my life so we are even.” He said winking at her, listening to her babbling about the first time she watched a performance. That made him remember the first time he watched her mother dance and that put a smile on his face. “The Nutcracker is beautiful, very Christmas spirit, maybe I can take you out to see it around here one day.” He set the menu aside, already done deciding what he was going to eat. “A glass of wine would be fine, it’s my treat so don’t be shy and ask for what you wish, I am going to spoil you today to make up for those two years.” He winked at her and called for the waitress to attend them.

lily i linger in the doorway

Lily was glad she wasn’t overdressed for the night. As she picked out the dress earlier that day she wasn’t sure if it wasn’t too official for the Secret Santa date… She had picked out two dress, knowing that she had to bring one of them back… It was just too expensive so that she could pay them both, but she couldn’t decide as she was in the store. Lily wasn’t even sure if she was going to be able to keep the black one, but guess she could cut down on something for couple of days to pay it… That was the one thing always reminded Lily of her home... Being poor. The thing that her parents couldn’t come to visit her or something made her sad… But until now she was used to being in Paris, by herself. She was actually glad she wasn’t off in a park, alone, drawing the happy couples… Sometimes Lily felt like her whole life were her paintings… She drew everything she saw and everything she experienced. And the sad part was that most of the things she draw never happened to her… Most of them she saw in someone elses life… But right now was about now, so Lily brought herself back to earth.
I couldn’t stay here if I wasn’t working… Its amazing I got a scholarship for Lumineuse… And my parents can’ support my life in Paris, so I have to work... she said and eyed him smiling. Life was hard, but it was something that everybody had to get through… Lily smiled… It was so easy to have a conversation with Frederic… It was like he was programmed to function the way that Lily liked to be treated… He laughed at the thing at her accent and she giggled. Great… it wouldn’t have been a good night if you disliked it… she smiled. He was a flirt and she liked it actually. It was funny, because Lily couldn’t flirt to save her life… To some girls if came absolutely naturally, but to Lily… Nope… Her tries of flirting were always sloppy and stupid, so she gave up on it… She decided that being herself would do the trick… Bad flirting was worse than no flirting, right? As he made the remark about her age she couldn’t help but smile. I am actually just as old as you mister. I started my village school one year earlier then I should have. So I got my scholarship earlier too. she smiled.
The gentlemen kind of personality that Frederic had, made Lily knees go weak a little bit. He was like the guys she read about in Jane Austin books… Pulling her chair, opening the door, not overdoing it with flirting and not making any signs of only getting her into his bed… That was a huge plus, because all of the guys that wanted to go out with Lily in the past two years were awful assholes. Plus the fact that he was a dancer gave him a fantastic body… And to be honest, Lily had a thing for nice bodies… As he made the joke about the ballet costumes she smiled… But seeing those muscular men… It is not all that bad, you know? she smiled and took the menu card herself. If you want I can teach you the basics… Like a rose, a face… It is not all that hard, you know? she shrugged. Drawing came natural to her probably like dance to him… She smiled. I would love that… Maybe one day you would dance it yourself and I will be able to watch… she giggled and read through the menu card. She didn’t want him to pay for her food… They both seemed to have good time… But she knew that he would object if she wanted them to split so she kept her mouth shut. As the waitress came over Lily smiled at her. I would like to have a glass of Bordeaux and a plate of Tartiflette please. she said in a soft voice with a smile. After they ordered Lily turned back to Frederic. So, Fredric… What else do you like to do apart from dancing? she said and tilted her head to the side.

Frederic wasn’t rich, but he wasn’t poor either, or at least not as poor as to have to cut down on things. Sure he was short sometimes and had to be more careful but that was life right? His life though was focused around hi dance and only that, he didn’t have time to hang around, he didn’t have time to get girlfriends or things like that… his only friends were all from the same circle though he seemed to have some… kind of attraction for artist girls. Fred barely had time to do social life even when he was such a social boy, and it was hard for him to be apart from his people but he realized every day he spent with his friends was important. “I’ve got a scholarship too, it was the best chance they could give me.” He smiled and shook his head. “Oh I’m sure it would have been. You look like a great girl to spend time with.” She looked honest and cute and Fred liked that, he was a very honest person, sometimes too honest. No, Fred wasn’t all smiles and sweet, he had his side like everyone and sometimes he tended to be too honest, being taken as cruel.
He looked at her sideways, and laughed. She looked younger than him, so petite, so fragile like the girls he danced with… and it was that complexion what he liked in girls, maybe because he liked to be taller, to be able to wrap them tight in his arms perfectly. “You still look younger. Like a fairy!” He winked at her, Fred was a gentleman, he liked to think so. He honored her mother like that, he liked to listen to girls, observe the little details because they gave so much information that no one ever cared to listen. Guys always complained about girls being difficult and complicated and that you never know what they wanted, but it was surprisingly easy to know all that once you actually paid attention to them and truly listened to them. Seeing her smile and be comfortable was what he aimed for and it was actually making his night a very pleasant one, which meant dinner wasn’t going to be the end of their date.
Fred made no plans though because he liked to surprise people and to surprise himself, whichever thing that came to his head after leaving the restaurant was going to be the thing they would do. “Oh sure thing, that’s if you like men. I tend to go for the girls maybe I am a bit weird?” He said laughing. Actually Fred didn’t like to laugh about that because he had a lot of problems in the past; needless to say he lost a lot of chances with girls because they believed he was gay. Now he didn’t care as much, if they wanted to believe that well, it was their lost not his. “You will have to be very patient with me though, I am horrible with draws, I swear you won’t know if I am doing a dog or a cat, or even a horse.” Dancing was something he loved since he was a kid, and yes it was something natural for his body to move with the music, that was the reason it was so easy for him to learn the movements, because they flowed in his body with the music and he didn’t have to think about them, they just… happened. “In return I’ll try to teach you some basics too.”
He had always liked the idea of dancing in big stages with thousands of people watching him but that would be in a long distant future. He shrugged his shoulders at her as if to say it was no big deal. “I would like the same to drink and Tartare de bœuf Charolais coupé aux couteaux, pommes frites.” He smiled and gave the waitress his menu turning to Lily to focus his attention on her. “I actually don’t have time to do much when I’m not dancing, but I will say… whatever I feel like doing.” He said laughing again, thinking about how he went hiking with Madison out of the blue. “I like doing things, I’m a very active person and very random. What about you? What do you when you are not drawing?”
