HISTORY, luca has always been a little strange. from the get-go, his parents knew he would be gay. the other childrens' parents knew he would be gay. everyone who knew what "gay" was, knew he would be it someday. he liked to play with ken instead of barbie, but he liked to put barbie's clothes on ken. he also made clothes for ken out of scraps of fabric his mother would bring home. he was always collecting shoes and hats and scarves and jackets, always looking his best, even when the other children made fun of him. girls loved him. they thought he was cute, and since he wasn't like the other boys, they wanted him more. but alas, the poor girls never had a clue. when luca got into junior high, however, everything changed. his classmates started to notice his "off" behavior. girls suddenly didn't flirt with him, and boys avoided him. sure, he had friends, but they were all girls. he noticed that he didn't feel the way boys felt around his girl friends. instead, he slowly came to realize that he liked how boys looked. he liked the cut of their bodies and the stylishly mussed hair. and when he accepted it, so did everyone else. but not everyone accepted it lightly.
you see, luca is from texas. and in texas, gays are a minority. they are treated like an inferior, and pushed around. when luca realized that he liked boys, so did all of the bullies. he was constantly pushed around. eventually, his friends deserted him. his father got lung cancer and died. he was left totally alone. until one day, a new boy came to town. he was from a different state, and he was also gay. they hit it off right away, and soon they began dating. they kissed, they met in secret, and eventually, they had sex. but it seemed that the pressure was too much for the new kid. when people found out about their torrid affair, they started picking on him too. he ditched luca, just like everyone else.
at graduation, luca's mother surprised him with the best gift she could ever give him. the gift of starting again.
