PERSONALITY, most people would likely describe simon as more or less a lovable goofball. the kid has a hard time taking things seriously. most of the time that's a good thing. especially since he has such a contagious smile. simon's always the one that laughs at everything, and likes to keep the mood light. it's by no means rare to catch him cracking a joke. his humor can be a bit off-beat and sometimes he's the only one to find what he said funny but the way he collapses into giggle fits usually gets the people around him to join in. the majority of the time his mood is good and it tends to heighten the mood of everyone around him as well. simon doesn't like seeing people down and if someone is having a bad day he does what he can to improve it. if he can't make a person happy then he'll linger around to be the shoulder to cry on. at the same time depressiveness makes him uncomfortable and it's easy to see the tension that arises when he's subjected to it. not that he'll let it chase him off but he really prefers sunshine and rainbows to dreary gray clouds.
while other people have "soft spots" simon is basically composed entirely of softness. he adores kids, animals, old people... everything. there's little that he finds to put him off and he adapts easily to almost any situation. his easygoing mannerisms tend to sway even bullies to enjoy his company. it's difficult to be downright mean to a kid who always has a grin on his face. simon will befriend anyone who gives him a chance and once you're on his positive side it's hard to shake it. people that others view as assholes strike him as just having issues. he has no qualms about digging deeper to figure out why someone behaves the way they do and unless he's entirely shoved away he'll keep coming back for more even if he suffers in the process. simon doesn't take much to heart and his jokester attitude usually prevents most rivalries from occurring.
simon enjoys pranks and mischief. he's not necessarily a trouble-maker but his taste for fun can sometimes get him into questionable situations. drugs and alcohol aren't big vices for him but he does appreciate a good party and he has no issues with smoking a bowl once in a while or drinking every now and again. he isn't judgmental in the least and certainly isn't the type to nark on someone for misbehaving. the only thing he doesn't approve of is when someone is doing something that causes harm to others. even then he interferes in a friendly manner and doesn't go proclaiming what's right or wrong. simon's got a bit of a savior complex and he trusts in the essence of goodwill in everyone. unfortunately that can make him a bit of a doormat since he tends to look past the bad nature of others. people can warn him about a person but he'll try them out himself -- likely time and time again -- before being honestly convinced that it's better to stay away from them.
when it comes to love and romance simon tends to be awkward as hell. he doesn't exactly feel shy but any suaveness he tries to pull off usually ends up just making a fool of himself. relationships aren't something he's well-versed in by any means and his social graces stutter when faced with someone he finds attractive, and even more when it's vice versa. if someone pursues him he's usually oblivious to the fact and will play it off as just friendship. he isn't on a set mission to avoid all romantic contact but sometimes it can feel that way. simon doesn't mean to give people the cold shoulder when they're interested, he just isn't certain how to handle that situation when it arises so he usually chooses to ignore it. simon's confident that he's a great friend but a bit skewed on his perceptions when it comes to whether or not he'd make a good boyfriend. the supposed naivety that he assumes causes him to be a bit lonely at times and he tries to keep himself convinced that just be social is enough.
although he's cheerful 99% of the time it doesn't mean it's impossible to anger simon. few and far between there's still things that irk him and he can have a temper when pushed too far. however he always feels bad when he gets grumpy and won't hesitate to apologize for snapping at people. everyone has their off days and he's no exception, but he doesn't like it to ruin whatever he has with other people just because a foul mood arises. simon also sucks royally when it comes to holding a grudge and usually remains mad for a maximum of a few days before he'll forgive someone. second chances are no stranger to him. even thirds, fourths, and so on. people can hurt him but he figures the past is the past and tries never to hold mistakes against people. after all he's made mistakes himself. nobody's perfect and he's under no illusions when it comes to that.
one last, rather important thing: simon has a neurological condition known as synesthesia. there are many forms of this, and the form simon has is known as audio-visual synesthesia. this condition causes simon to "see" sounds. when he's playing the guitar not only does he hear the music but he sees something almost like fireworks that rise out of every note. music isn't the only thing that triggers this effect, and he'll have the same experience when a car alarm goes off or when someone drops a plate that smashes to the floor. as is common in those with synesthesia simon also suffers from epilepsy associated with the disorder. while seizures aren't overly common he does still have them from time to time. the synesthesia isn't something simon really minds, but he finds the seizures to be embarrassing. especially when he has them in crowded public places.

HISTORY, there wasn't a whole lot that was overly interesting about simon's early life. he was diagnosed with synesthesia when he was five. other than that it was a fairly boring, normal sort of household. simon began playing instruments early on. by age eight he was great at guitar and age ten he'd gotten the drums down. he dabbled in other instruments off and on as well. at eleven he began writing music. when simon was fifteen one of his sister's friends invited him to join a band. the other members were all older than him by four years at minimum. however, they were impressed by simon's talent and overlooked the age gap to have him join. the whole thing started out small, moving slowly from the garage to a few local shows at coffee shops or battle of the bands venues. the group was actually really good and after one of their gigs they were approached by a someone scouting for a medium-sized label. it didn't take much convincing to get the boys to sign.
everything seemed to happen fast then. although simon was seventeen, bordering on eighteen, and still in high school he spent every other waking moment he had with the band and the group soon entered the recording studio. soon after his birthday simon was at a party with the other guys in the band. one of the member's wives ended up drunk and came on to simon. she kissed him and... he kissed back. although he felt bad he was under the influence of a few substances and still a teenaged virgin boy. things got heated and they ended up in a bedroom losing clothes. the husband walked in on it and promptly started a fight. simon apologized profusely but came out with a black eye and a very disgruntled fellow band member.
the entire thing ultimately led to a divorce. the air never seemed to clear after that, and as the weeks dragged on simon realized things were too messed up to continue in the group. after tiring of arguments he finally resigned to being kicked from the band. the studio c.d. was released shortly after and was a huge success. the band's career has been going strong and simon hasn't spoken to them since. feeling lost, confused, and ashamed simon began searching for something new. he came across this college in france while browsing the internet one night and on a whim decided to take an outrageous risk in hopes it could shake his funk and move. although his parents were shocked at the entirely random idea they agreed to support their son in his decision. without knowing a word of french apart from "bonjour," simon packed his bags and headed off to paris to escape the guilt of his mistake.
