PERSONALITY,
in one word, luke's broken, and nothing but broken. he's not happy, not cheerful or joyful, and overall not a very positive person. in fact, he's clinically depressed, though he takes pills for that and manages to cover most of it up. it's a surprise that he isn't an actor, when he forces himself to laugh and smile every day so he doesn't worry his family or friends. so sure, he pretends – and it's easier around some people than others – but when you actually get him to stop acting like someone that he isn't, luke isn't a very good friend. sure, he's kind of loyal to the people that he loves, but it's hard for him to open up to people. he shows people the part of him that is emotionally fine, likes partying, and doesn't have any problems. that means that when he actually feels that it's safe for him to show someone the side of him that's in a bad place, he often breaks down around them, if only from the stress of pretending that everything's okay around other people.
the face that he shows everyone requires its own description too, even if it's rather stereotypical. luke smiles and laughs easily, or at least often, since he forces himself to do it a large amount of the time. sometimes it can be a rather bitter laugh and a mocking smile, but those only appear when he isn't making an effort to be polite... which is actually quite often, sadly. his attitude around strangers depends on his mood, but semi-close friends normally get his 'everything's okay' act. said act also includes frequent partying, though he's technically not allowed to drink, since it cancels the effect of his pills and he tends to slip into an extremely low mood. luke doesn't really pay much attention to consequences, though, so he often drinks anyway. of course, not caring about the outcome of his actions also carries over to other things, and he can be rather childish at times; touching people – it's only people touching him that he dislikes, vise versa is perfectly fine for him – and saying some pretty stupid things.

HISTORY,
you'd think that by growing up on a farm, luke would have been an outcast at the school he'd gone to as a child, but that wasn't at all true. he wasn't exactly popular, but he wasn't ignored or tormented for being a farm kid. sure, maybe his chores included feeding the chickens and goats in addition to the normal washing the dishes and cleaning his room, but that never made much of a difference to his friends. luke was a rather social kid, making jokes and getting along with a good amount of the school. even the teachers liked him, though he wasn't one of their favorites. he was normal, fine, and happy. barely anything was wrong with him other than a few anger management issues, and he even started taking guitar lessons from his father at a pretty young age.
his father was probably the most important person in luke's world, and luke always went to him when he was having a problem with schoolwork, guitar practice, or anything around the farm. in luke's eyes, leonardo mannix was the perfect role model and mentor, especially since luke would be taking over the farm when he was old enough. everything that luke wanted to be was in his father, but as he got older, that changed a bit. he got more involved in his guitar, and when some of his friends convinced him to be the backup singer for the little band that they were putting together for the middle school talent show, luke became even more distracted with the world of music. his dependency on his father started fading away, and because of that sudden lack of love that he'd been giving around for most of his life, luke's anger management issues got more than a bit worse.
they were still controllable, sure, but a few of his already distant friends completely drifted away. luke was still social, and still generally nice, but he got oddly violent when someone pressed the wrong buttons. he put most of that into his music, though, and the little band that he and his friends had formed so long ago had already secured a place in a small music competition by the end of highschool. the only problem was that it was in california, but after a bit of arguing with his parents, luke got the permission to go and the airline tickets that would get him there. everything was turning out nicely, and though he and his friends didn't get anywhere near first place, it had still been a great experience. they returned home with their egos a little too swollen, and that was where things got a little more complicated.
they wanted more. more competitions, more cities to go to, more music, more everything. the parents of luke's bandmates may have had a bit of a problem with their kids chasing down a dream that not many people ever achieved, but luke's parents had an even bigger problem with it. he was supposed to work on the farm, not to go tramping around in the world of music, aiming for fame when he would probably just fail. they got in another argument, and luke's anger management issues came into play once again, and.. well, if there hadn't been a large shovel at hand, everything probably would have ended just fine. but it didn't end well, not at all. luke's father ended up in the local hospital, in a coma that he didn't come out of for just under three weeks.
how did luke feel about that? nothing but guilty, obviously. he did nothing but apologize for a few days, but that wasn't good enough for his family, who basically isolated him for most of the time that his father was in the hospital. luke, being the social person that he was, couldn't bear to be isolated. it just didn't fit in with his personality, his plans for life, his anything. after two weeks of living in isolation, being completely shut out, what else could he do but try to make it up to his family in another way? seeing as farm tools had done so much damage last time, it was simple enough for luke to retreat into one of the barns and basically attack his inner elbows with a trowel. and luke wasn't just aiming to hurt himself, he was aiming to die.
thankfully, though, his younger brother had chores to do in the barn that day. koby was able to stop luke from doing any more damage to himself, but after that, two members of the family were confined to the hospital. luke's father woke up about a week after luke's attempted suicide, but both of them had to go through some physical therapy. of course, luke had to completely re learn how to work his arms and hands, so his took a bit longer. he also lost the ability to play his guitar, which didn't help with the fact that he was slowly slipping into a depression. what was he supposed to do, without his guitar and the close bond that he'd always had with his family? they were arguing a lot more, making a stupid fuss over luke when they were in an oddly good mood, and luke hated it. he couldn't stand to be constantly switching between being hated and being treated like a helpless child, so he asked to leave.
there was no hope of luke continuing in the band with his friends anymore, as they already had a lead singer and luke couldn't play his guitar anymore, but luke couldn't exactly work on the farm either. there were so many things that he couldn't manage, which frustrated him, but he could still sing. luke was relying on that fact like a life buoy, and his parents eventually agreed to send him to an arts school in paris, provided that koby go with him to make sure that he didn't try to kill himself again. luke was a little reluctant to let his oh so perfect brother tag along, but since it was the only way he'd be able to go to paris, he eventually agreed. he may not have been getting away from all of his family, but with a new setting and only koby around to make sure that he didn't try to hurt himself, it was a bit easier to take his pills, go to his therapy, and try to act like everything was normal.
it wasn't normal, though. no matter how many friends luke managed to make, his depression still make him reckless and, obviously, unhappy. he didn't pay attention to consequences, and though he managed to keep up with all the schoolwork, it just didn't seem right to him. ever since he'd tried to kill himself, absolutely nothing was the same. it was wrong, and after a few months, luke was completely convinced that he should have died. that koby shouldn't have stopped him the first time, and the second time.. well, koby wasn't around to stop him when he reopened his scars with a kitchen knife. the person that stopped him was himself, because no matter how much luke wanted to be erased off the face of the earth, he was lazy and couldn't tolerate much pain. by the time that his brother was back from the grocery store, though, luke was already passed out on the floor.
the next few weeks were a bit of a blur for him, but it was back to the hospital with him, and then koby was stubborn enough to drag him back to australia for some time away from paris. being with his family again just made his condition worse, though, which lead to a little debate over whether he should be allowed back to paris or not. eventually, he moved back to paris and continued with school. all his problems are just a little bit worse, and he's going through physical therapy once again, but he hasn't returned to his suicidal mindset... yet, that is.
