-- derek and maureen are fraternal twins. i'll spare you reading maureen's history, so i'll sum it up in a nutshell. they have always been really close and get along really well. their mom was american, and their dad french. derek had always taken an interest in america, and always wanted to go. before their mother could take them to her home, she had their father were killed in a car accident. (cliche, i know) anyway, they were moved to the care of their aunt who loved them and raised them well.

-- maureen handled the death better than her brother. derek started down a bad path of partying and drinking, and getting into some light drugs. maureen knew he partied but she never knew the extent of his partying. he hated keeping something like this from his sister, but it took the pain away. he discovered his love of writing around the same time maureen discovered her passion for dance. they both set their sights on la lumineuse and were accepted there when they turned eighteen.

-- derek continued his partying, and maureen eventually found out what he was up to. she encouraged him to get some help and try to cut back on his heavy partying. his grades were starting to drop, and maureen knew if he got kicked out of the school, he wouldn't know what to do with himself. derek poured almost all of his attention into his writing and became rather antisocial. maureen tried to talk to him, but he ignored her and got mad at her easily. they started to grow apart. it kills maureen to see her brother so serious and so not himself.
